The Panthers never should've had so much damn time to throw the ball. WIthout our Hill and Mebane defense is feeble on the line. Strong offensive lines = problems here on out.

Outside of Tharold Simon having a very rough game that I'm sure can be corrected (hopefully by Maxwell being back) I saw a fantastic defensive performance. It is obvious we are not as good without Mebane and Hill but those guys replacing them did a hell of a job and I like our chances against any team left. Our defense completely shut Carolina down for I think the 1st 4 possessions, they were on the field for 20 of the 1st 30 minutes in the 1st half and they finally started to bend. it sucks having guys hurt but we still have Williams, McDaniel and Dobbs inside and can also move Bennett inside and put Irvin on the outside. I don't think the sky is falling quite yet!

It was a 4 man rush all game and it was designed to contain Newton which it did. Packer fans reading this should know that 170 yards by the Panthers were gained after they were down 24-10.

The run defense has played well considering how effective Carolina was running the ball during their winning streak (ran for more yards than any team during that span) against some of the better run defenses in the league. Rodgers can't move and Lacey is a big slower tumbler type runner and our speed and technical tackles should remove him from being effective in short order.

Kevin Williams has been an absolute god send. He kinda knows the Packers tendencies as well dontcha think?

I have a feeling they will be much better against the Packers on Sunday. The rotation wasn't as crisp on Saturday night but should be better now that they can field a consistent one. The positive is that no one on DL got hurt. When Mebane got hurt, the Seahawks DL struggled against the Chiefs. The following weeks, they were pretty darn good. I think it may be the same case here. Losing Mebane and Hill does weaken the line but Mebane has been gone for several week now and they were stopping people. They will find away to overcome this.

The problem is, we can't afford to do much more than that against Rodgers either. He may not be mobile, but he can beat the blitz with his arm and gameplan, so we'll need to be keeping people in coverage and timing blitzes carefully.

At some point, a good defense has to be able to produce pressure with its front four without relying on the blitz. Fortunately, our secondary often gives the DL enough time to do this.

The bolded part is false. I posted the defensive stats for their last 5 or 6 regular season opponents in another thread. None of them were even league average against the run.

Exactly. And remember we were facing Cam Newton. With the LOB we weren't worried about him throwing. We were worried about his feet, so they rushed minimal guys and played contain. And how many rushing yards did he have? Exactly

The Panthers interior lineman were definitely creating a push up the middle, that was by FAR the most success their running game had.

So I am a little worried with no Hill that an older Williams is now wearing down with having to play the majority of snaps. Carroll and Quinn better come up with some wrinkles to help out, cause I can guarantee you GB is going to try the same thing with Lacy.

This is correct. The Hawks plan was to contain Newton and see if he could win with his arm. Newton is a load to bring down so they sacrificed rush for containment. After the Hawks got up by two touchdowns, Newton's time to throw in the pocket was limited because they didn't care if he took off because him running keeps the clock ticking.

I thought Newton was the best I have seen him. This Panther team should be a force next year with a complimentary receiver. They are built very much like the Hawks.

I remember watching the game and it wasn't until Cam started to sprint out that we had problems.

Cam running put a lot of pressure on us to make sure we had him and his running accounted for.

It's the same crap other teams have to take into account against RW..

We won't have to worry about this against ARod.

Carolina had over 80 yards of rushing in the first half, and it was all up the gut. That IMO can't be explained away just by a 4 man rush trying to contain Cam.

Our regular defensive scheme is predicated on just rushing 4, so I don't buy the contain Cam excuse, there was definitely a softer interior defensive push Saturday night without Hill.
