If needed ; which can happen at any time ; can either of those two start and win a game ; even against the weakest opponents on this years schedule ? I think not.
You should think about that a little bit more. Geno Smith has won 12 games in the NFL on worse teams than ours should be this season and even Paxton Lynch won one of his four starts on a terrible Broncos team. Nobody thinks they are particularly good but the QB is still just one position and the better QB doesn't always win in real NFL games.

Mullens beat the Hawks last year . I know good backups are tough to come by...
You are the first person I've ever seen to be jealous over Nick Mullens as a backup QB. He is not a particularly good backup and his 3 wins last season just demonstrate that mediocre QBs do still occasionally win NFL games.

I think is was Chris that broached the subject of the Hawks drafting a good QB prospect ; to train and develop for a backup role right away or a possible starting position in the future . I agree with that versus bringing in veteran retreads that can't or won't be anything but an emergency arm that nobody wants to see on the field
The fundamental problem here is scarcity. We have a finite amount of draft picks, our salary is constrained by a salary cap, our roster is limited to 53 players, and even practice time is limited by player's association.
The argument is not whether it would be good to add a promising QB to the roster but whether that is a better idea than our other options with the same resources. The QB position carries a hefty premium due to it's importance and so getting a good one requires a lot of resources. What positions would you downgrade in order to afford to spend more resources (draft picks, money, time) on backup QB than we are already doing?
