Why dislike the 49ers team ( their FO, players, and coaches) for the actions of their fans? You guys surely wouldn't change your opinion about your political leanings or your opinion of your favorite TV show because a 49er fan likes it. Why do it with their football team?

Why is the sky blue, and the grass green? It just is.

This is the same line of thinking that lead people to think Kings and tyrants were necessary and divine, women and certain races inferior, and just about every other socioeconomic, ideological, and cultural issue of past and present. You may not wish to make the connection and dismiss it because of the context but ignorance is still ignorance. The sky isn't blue and grass isn't green. We perceive the sky to be blue and we perceive grass to be green. Nothing involving people just is.

Because the 9rs fans, Coaches and players alike, abe a bunch of *******.
They've never given respect to ANY Seahawks players, Coaches, or owners, let alone the great 12th man or Seahawks fans.

Sherman disrespects people and he's an ******* too. He does in the media and on the field. It's a part of his game and even those who dislike this part of his personality love the guy for his play. If Sherman gets a pass, why doesn't a single member of the 49ers squad in your view?
Yes, but Sherman is a Seahawk, so he's right, and the 49rs are "Jackwagons"

Because two and a half years ago all 49er fans were Raider fans. And we as Seahawk fans, especially us long time fans, know to hate Raider fans more than all others.

And the more real answer, because its fun, and it's part of being a sport fan. It's sport hate, not real hate. At least to me.

BLASPHEMER!!! ;)

This might very well be the cruelest thing that you could say to a Niner fan. You think being a division rival is bad. Try having a team right across the bay from you. We treat eachother just like division rivals, except as you have undoubtedly read in the news, some people take our rivalry from across the bay to a whole new level.

I enjoy the "illogical emotional investment" much like many here enjoy arguing over details of this rivalry. I don't wonder why this rivalry exists (although my thread title certainly implies I do). I think it exists because its fun for the people involved and the rest is just fallacy. What I wonder is why people enjoy this part of the NFL more than other parts of life - jelly beans and books included. I don't ask to judge (might act like it though). I ask because I'm curious.

If you know that people engage in rivalry because it's fun and all else is fallacy (which is correct, at least that's the healthy way to do it), then I don't get why the OP makes it out to be such a mystery.

If I'm interpreting correctly you're wondering why rivalries are more fun than jellybeans? I'm not sure I'm understanding the question here. Humans are animals, animals are tribal, when we divide into tribes over stuff that really matters it's stressful, when we divide into tribes over stuff that doesn't matter like sports it's a way to let off steam and also forget about our real worries for a time while we pretend we give a crap about sports. People enjoy that, people enjoy books, people enjoy jellybeans, there's a lot of stuff people enjoy.

I think you're bored.

It's human nature to hate your rivals. That's why Cain smacked Abel upside the head with a rock. It's why alpha male wolves fight to the death for supremacy of the pack.

The Hawks and 49'ers are the alpha males of the NFC West............and it's on like Bing Bong Jack!

Couldn't you just as easily ask yourself why you bother rooting for any specific team at all? If you wanted to, you could just enjoy the sport for what it is -- a sheer display of athleticism. You pick a team to support for the sole reason of making the experience more fun for yourself.

Don't see the logic behind singling out "rivalries" as the only fallacy at play here.

Because the 49ers' success is inherently detrimental to the Seahawks' success?

Lol this thread is great. I'll make a few points then standby... haha.

First, one poster back on the first page pointed out the scope of the rivalry; I think Cleveland and Cincinnati shared something similar back in the day... and Steelers and Ravens to today as well. It is still relatively unique though.

Some of the way you guys describe Niner fans is pretty amusing. Imagine you're standing inside a glass dome, the glass is red in color, but not opaque. You look to the man next to you and he looks normal, but everyone outside your dome appears redish and weird. Well, same as you peer out on all the redish freaks, everyone outside that dome peers in on those redish freaks the same way ;).

Here's what I know about niner fans from attending games in SF:

most of their girlfriends do all the talking, the dudes are usually pretty cool once you prove to eachother you can take it as well as you can dish it out then you bust eachother's balls and have a good time. Of course it will be harder to travel to SF and rag on niner fans after they move to a new stadium because the ramshackle state of candlestick makes for some easy shots to take (really you guys can't afford light bulbs?)

But seriously once their girlfriends get a few beers in them, that's about the time you've joked around enough to be pretty comfortable with all the dudes around you and have a good time if you're not a moron, but then the women start in and ruin it while their captive boyfriends just look at you apologetically.

As for why we should dislike the 49ers? I'm not even sure that actual question deserves a real answer.

60niners, that's all well and good, but how many stabbings have Seahawks fans done at our stadium, and how many of yours have done at Candlestick?

Case status: rested

The jury finds in favor of the defendant, the Seattle Seahawks, and confirms their better nature over 49ers fans.

Except we're not peering out of a red dome to see redish freaks, we're looking into your red freaky dome to see the freaks. Our dome is nice and cool and blue and not freaky at all. Except on game day.

Okay now I'm leaning towards you are just a philosophical nut job.
