There is zero chance Bevell is fired. ZERO. NONE. If we lose Bevell, it'll be because he's offered a head coaching job, which anyone with an objective opinion on our staff (i.e. anyone outside of Seattle) thinks is a very real possibility.
Geez, we are talking about a 12-win season here minimum. We're talking about an offense that's still ranked top-10 in DVOA and scoring. We're talking about an offense that did this without its two highly paid receivers and missing its tackles for half the season. I'm not saying Bevell should be OC of the year, but this talk is ridiculous.
So you're saying if we no offensive improvement vs the Rams, and lose #1 seed because of it,. Then we go one and done in the Play-Offs because of more offensive woes, especially more bad game plans, failures to adjust, and more undiscilplined play that leads to more drive killing penalties.
You don't think Bevell will be on the hot seat? Okay, whatever....
And remember Bevell was here in 2011 where our offense had plenty of similar WR (Seahawks were without its top 2 WRs per pay) and suffered a plethora of O-Line injuries (where 4 starters ended up on I.R.) Statistically, the was rather mediocre .
The one constant this past few seasons has obvious been the arrival of Russell Wilson, and two,
Tom Cable, who transformed Lynch into one of the leagues best RBs, as well as coaching up, injury riddled O-lines without elite talent to work with. And taking project lineman and making them somewhat viable.
The best thing Bevell has done in his tenure here was incorporate the read option, and even then he poached it from the Redskins, and he wouldn't have been able to do it without a QB with Wilson's skill set.
Bevell is average at best and what makes him look so good is his bottom of the league passing attempts with a high percentage of down field splash plays coupled with Carroll's ball control offensive philosophy and clock controlling running attack coordinated by Cable.
If Bevell knew how to consistently adjust what the defense is giving the offense , we wouldn't have all these conversations about him.
LIKE WE SHOULDN'T BE NOW WHEN THIS WAS MERELY AN INQUIRY ON GARY KUBIAK FOR ANY REASON WHAT-SO-EVER THAT BEVELL ISN'T HERE NEXT YEAR.
Seriously? Tom Cable transformed Lynch? Tom Cable has 2 All Pros and some of his personal picks from the draft to work with and our O-Line is a disaster. With Okung and Breno out Russell was getting slaughtered back there! What kind of coaching was that? And our run game has gone downhill when we have an elite running back and a Pro Bowl caliber fullback. Cable is responsible for the run game, and with out it, the passing game doesn't get going.
The strategy for our defense, and most defenses in the league is to stop the run and make a team one dimensional. Opposing teams haven't had to work to hard to stop the run. So our only option is to throw the ball with average receivers and with very poor play at the guard position. Russell Wilson has gotten the hell beat out of him during several games this year.
I can't see how Cable gets any credit while Bevell gets the blame. And people don't know how much of an influence Pete is on the game. I do know that Pete said during one game "I was pushing Bev to throw the ball more." So in one game this year Pete was "interfering" with the offensive game plan.
So really don't see that anyone here can have enough inside information to say that Bevell is a poor play caller. He has looked unstoppable when he has some receivers like Sidney Rice, but we can't even get much out of our tight ends because they are staying in to block...
I think Bevell is doing a good job considering the obstacles he has had to overcome with this team. If we had just one true #1 receiver, this offense would be unstoppable, but we keep losing them to injuries and have to rely on players like Lockette and a gimpy Jermaine Kearse to fill in.
There is however, a very good chance that Bevell could land a head coaching gig and then we would have to start looking for a new OC, but I doubt Gary Kubiak is the guy. Even this year he had DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Johnson and still can't win games. Houston has always had a good running game and they have an excellent defense so I have to wonder about his ability to make the right calls. Even before their recent success (much of which I attribute to JJ Watt and Brian Cushing), he could barely make it 8 and 8 with constant high draft picks. Hell, he ruined David Carr by getting him slaughtered behind a poor offensive line, something I'm afraid might happen to RW if ours doesn't improve.
It's really tough to say who might be a good offensive coordinator should Bev leave. I thought Jeremy Bates was a "mad scientist" type play caller but apparently he kept going away from the run and got fired for it. I wouldn't mind seeing him get another chance. After all, it was he that authored that New Orleans Saints beat down.
I wish Brian Schottenheimer hadn't gotten hired by the Rams, I think he would have made a great candidate and is responsible for St Louis current success on offense with Clemens at the helm.
Who else would make a good candidate?
