Veteran TE's to target?

With Zach Miller's injury trouble and Luke Wilson showing some flashes but still looking like a rookie I expect John and Pete to be looking for a veteran TE that they can bring in on the cheap as some insurance. They may just keep an eye on other teams and swoop in to grab a guy that gets released in one of the upcoming cuts however it might be worth it to see if we can snag a guy via trade and get him in here a little bit earlier to get some continuity with the offense... Taking a look at some other teams rosters here is what I came up with:

Brent Celek - Philadelphia Eagles - He has been pretty healthy for his entire career only missing 1 game in his 7 years of service. Still decently young at 28 years old he's been a solid but unspectacular TE option for the Eagles the past 4 years with seasons of 76, 42, 62, and 57 receptions. He has been told by the coaching staff he will be relegated to mostly a blocking role with all the new talent they brought in this year (Zach Ertz and James Casey are likely to start ahead of him in most schemes). If Zach Ertz continues to impress the coaches and earns the 2nd TE spot the Eagles might be willing to trade Celek rather than keep him as a 3rd TE. I don't think they will outright release him as he's not overly expensive (and neither are their other TE's), and they aren't really hurting for cap space, but they could use some help at WR, and we just so happen to have a few "extra's" possibly.

John Carlson - Minnesota Vikings - Remember him? Well it sounds like the Vikings are beginning to have buyers remorse and rightly so. They didn't pay Carlson 25 million to be ineffective pretty much all of last year. He did play in 14 of the 16 games but was hardly used with Kyle Rudolph's emergence. Carlson did restructure his deal to avoid being cut but they still may look to offload him. Bottom line, John is solid when healthy. If he's ultimately cut I expect the Seahawks plane to be on it's way immediately to bring him in. However there is a chance they stick it out for 1 more year with him and try to recuperate more value for him if he can have a comeback season. Maybe he's worth a 5th or 6th and a little bit of convincing them that they need the cap space to bring John back to Seattle?

What are your thoughts all? Should we just stand pat and hope Miller can tough it out all year or do we need to bring a Vet in? Are there guys besides these two that you'd like to see us target if we are looking for a Veteran TE?

John Carlson's problem is Christian Ponder.

I agree, I would be VERY surprised if we went into the season with the TE's we have on the roster. Willson doesn't look like he will be a #2 this year, at least not the #2 that this offense needs.

Could definitely see a WR or CB traded for one.

I'd definitely be in favor of working out a trade to bring John back, assuming the asking price isn't something unreasonable.

I don't see it... At least with Carlson. He can't block at all. In this system blocking is more important for a tight end than receiving.

I want Jermaine Gresham.

Mean blocker, good hands, top 5 in YAC for TE.

That's not what Tom Cable said about Carlson...

Cable also praised Carlson’s run-blocking abilities, saying he was unsure about where the fourth-year player stood in that regard when he took the job here. But from what he’s seen so far, Cable is confident enough in Carlson as a complete player that he called Carlson and Miller “two tight ends who I think are as good as there is in football.”

But our guys have better SPARQ ratings than Gronk and Hernandez!

Then why did Kyle Rudolph go to the Pro Bowl last year? John Carlson's problem is his himself.

Have to remember Carlson was trying to plug one hole in the sieve that was our offensive line at the time, he was rated decent coming out of college and he was asked to help out our tackles since they were so bad. I would not be paying his inflated salary though and he will cost us to come back.

Teams that are stocked at TE would be more my focus, besides we want a healthy player and the history of what we get from Minnesota has been before usage take to repair shop.

Nice post. I don't think we have financial room for a good TE so would expect them to grab one off of the waiver wire.

Seems to me that Carlson has proven to be a little 'Delicate'...
These TE's the Hawks have already have enough bumps and bruises...
Maybe if Carp gets healthy...
They slide McQuistan over to RG...
And they can see if Sweezy can catch the ball.

I don't think Carlson would do well here. Wilson requires his targets to be open by a country mile before he targets them, and Carlson can't separate. Also, he's a terrible blocker.

mcgrath is better than carlson. carlson makes the easy plays look hard, and he eventually stopped being able to make them and started to look completely lost and out of place on a football field.

Pretty sure Cam Morrah is available. Rather have him than either of these guys.

Did the 49ers cut him? Cause that's where he signed. I didn't hear if he was released, but if he was he would be a decent option.

I remember being surprised that Seattle drafted Carlson over Fred Davis. Knowing what I now do about the Ruskell regime, I guess I shouldn't have been.
