With Zach Miller's injury trouble and Luke Wilson showing some flashes but still looking like a rookie I expect John and Pete to be looking for a veteran TE that they can bring in on the cheap as some insurance. They may just keep an eye on other teams and swoop in to grab a guy that gets released in one of the upcoming cuts however it might be worth it to see if we can snag a guy via trade and get him in here a little bit earlier to get some continuity with the offense... Taking a look at some other teams rosters here is what I came up with:
Brent Celek - Philadelphia Eagles - He has been pretty healthy for his entire career only missing 1 game in his 7 years of service. Still decently young at 28 years old he's been a solid but unspectacular TE option for the Eagles the past 4 years with seasons of 76, 42, 62, and 57 receptions. He has been told by the coaching staff he will be relegated to mostly a blocking role with all the new talent they brought in this year (Zach Ertz and James Casey are likely to start ahead of him in most schemes). If Zach Ertz continues to impress the coaches and earns the 2nd TE spot the Eagles might be willing to trade Celek rather than keep him as a 3rd TE. I don't think they will outright release him as he's not overly expensive (and neither are their other TE's), and they aren't really hurting for cap space, but they could use some help at WR, and we just so happen to have a few "extra's" possibly.
John Carlson - Minnesota Vikings - Remember him? Well it sounds like the Vikings are beginning to have buyers remorse and rightly so. They didn't pay Carlson 25 million to be ineffective pretty much all of last year. He did play in 14 of the 16 games but was hardly used with Kyle Rudolph's emergence. Carlson did restructure his deal to avoid being cut but they still may look to offload him. Bottom line, John is solid when healthy. If he's ultimately cut I expect the Seahawks plane to be on it's way immediately to bring him in. However there is a chance they stick it out for 1 more year with him and try to recuperate more value for him if he can have a comeback season. Maybe he's worth a 5th or 6th and a little bit of convincing them that they need the cap space to bring John back to Seattle?
What are your thoughts all? Should we just stand pat and hope Miller can tough it out all year or do we need to bring a Vet in? Are there guys besides these two that you'd like to see us target if we are looking for a Veteran TE?
