Those are all legitimate criticisms, but they are extremely hard to quantify without introducing a significant bias. They're intangibles, like rating a woman's appearance. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. PFF does about as good of a job as humanly possible at a nearly impossible task.

Some of their rankings don't meet the eye test. For example, Derek Carr (#5) is ranked ahead of Josh Allen (#6). Joe Burrow is the #2 ranked QB, but his team is just 4-8. IMO a good part of a quarterback's ranking should be team success as the QB is the most influential position on the field. Patrick Mahomes isn't having a very good statistical season, but his Chiefs have lost just once. From what I've seen, the top QB's in the league are Allen, Jackson, Mahomes, Herbert, Hurts, and Goff, not necessarily in that order. And, I'd have Russell Wilson ranked in the top 10 if he'd played in a few more games. No way would I have Carr and Burrow ranked in the top 10.

What I use PFF for is to give me a heads up on a specific player. If I see a player highly ranked whom I've never heard of, it sends up a flag to keep an eye on him. A good example is Nick Herbig of the Steelers. I'd never heard of him before, but I see where PFF has him ranked as the #5 edge player ahead of Nick Bosa and Micha Parsons, so the next time the Steelers are in Prime Time, I'll be keeping an eye on him.

Carr is playing really well, he is just doing it out of the spotlight and on a team that overall is struggling to break through. . I cant say much about Allen but i do know the dude does some phenomenal stuff, and then makes some boneheaded mistakes... (see their game against the Texans) so him being a bit lower is understandable.

Joe Burrow has no defense in cinci. He can carry his team and score 50 and his D will give up 51. I can see the logic there. Dont see how you dock a QB for Wins and losses if he isnt directly responsible for the losses. There have been some really good qbs who have suffered on teams with bad defenses who gave up way too many poi ts and provided them too few opportunities.

Hurts? Really? I havent seen any evidence he should even be top 10 this year.

Mahomes is on the struggle bus. Its hard to not have him in the top few qbs in the league, but in reality, his play this year is squarely in the 'good' range. Dude is seeing what its like to not have the benefit of great line play. The Chiefs have only 1 loss, but they have been beaten a few times and by no skill of their own, come out with a W. Last week agaisnt the Raiders was a great example. The first game they olayed against the Bengals was another one. They were gifted 2 bogus PI calls that allowed them to kick a GW fG.

All in all, i actually like the fact that PFF is illuminating the play of guys like Carr who would otheriwse be lost in the noise of praise for the usual suspects and qbs putting up big numbers in some areas but not others, or QBs playing on more complete teams.

Daniel Jeremiah was on Brock and Salk and said teams don’t like their grading but that people do use their site for all the tracking and data they have.

That's how I imagined it was. The stats are pretty invaluable. I doubt they are relying on the grades though.

Josh Allen has been cutting down on his bonehead mistakes. What has been holding him back in years past has been his interceptions. Last season, he threw 18 picks. This season, he's thrown just 5 in 12 games. They've won 7 in a row, including a b!tch slapping of the Niners on national TV in horrible weather conditions and are the only team to have defeated the defending champ Chiefs. He's a dual threat quarterback that gives defenses fits in preparing for them. At this point, he is the MVP and his PFF ranking should reflect that. I can see Lamar Jackson being ranked ahead of him as both he and the Ravens are having great seasons, but not Burrow or Carr solely because of their team's performance. Heck, they have Jayden Daniels ranked 3 slots ahead of Allen at #3.

I agree with your take about PFF illuminating players like Carr, and I'm not advocating that they change their system. All I'm saying is that it's things like the above that one has to keep in mind when looking at PFF's rankings and grades. They have their flaws and should not be taken as some sort of holy grail.

4 years, $53 million is not worth it for the 13th best guard, and that's assuming Lewis would even be playing that well here. His play last season was not worth that.

I think John has the right philosophy on guards, he's just striking out on the ones he does get. He could just as easily be doing that with the expensive ones too.

Winston and Howell, Superbowl winning combo. Something that will surely put the fear into opposing DCs?
Hey for a decade Geno was a massive bust so you never know?

And Howell's OC was so bad he just got fired after one season at UCLA where his offense ranked 126th out of 134 teams in scoring. He'd have some good stuff to work with here: an improving OL and weapons most teams would kill for.
