Outside of this year, Fant has been pretty reliable only missing 1 game of the previous 34, so I don't think the ding on reliability is really fair.

I think the real issue with Fant is he's just got a really big cap hit relative to his production to this point. Some of that is on us, we were below average in terms of TE targets, but his numbers remain his numbers.

I could definitely see him getting cut for that $9M in savings... but that's just another TE spot we need to fill and I don't know that given how reliant Kubiak's scheme is on TE play that I'd want the unit to be filled entirely of Barner on his 2nd year, Brady Russell who has played a grand total of 3 games, and a rookie.

Pretty much summed it up. I think Fant fits this offense fine. The Saints had Juwan Jennings last season and made it work. The only problem with Fant is his cap hit and that's it. It's a business move. I'm fine with the player.

There is a player in the draft I'm eyeing that can step in right away and be an impact blocker. That's Jackson Hawes. He's really fun to watch and I think he has one of the safest floors in the whole draft. You know he's going to block and block well. Anything he offers in the passing game is a bonus. But then again...he's on a rookie contract.

I just saw an interview with Michael Penix, and, as a Husky fan for years, I watched him do what he does...did we eff-up and not move up to get this guy? It was doable. It would have cost, but...did we not eff up in not moving up in the draft last year...

Crazy some of the teams you guys are forgetting:

Niners - Kittle missed two games and still went 78/1106/8 and is a tremendous blocker
Ravens - Andrews/Likely is a stud combo that had 17 TDs between the two of them this season
Steelers - Freiermuth has been a very reliable option in their ball control offense
Dolphins - Jonnu Smith's 88 receptions led the team this season

You could include the Vikings too when Hockenson is healthy.

IMO George Kittle is the best TE in the league when you take into consideration his blocking. As ugly as he is, he has to be a good blocker.

I just want to see the team add talent. If there is a TE like Warren or Loveland that falls and the team thinks they can be a true difference maker, they'd be doing a huge disservice passing on them for someone they see as an average guard prospect.

Looking at this year's QB class I'm inclined to agree. But only to a point. I would hate to have passed up on Murphy to get Penix, but he might have been our shortcut to success offensively.

Teams for sure needs to draft a TE this year, there is a pretty solid stock of them.

In terms of FA, it's slim pickings. Maybe you get some good value but it also depends on what you're looking for. Some names of interest I'd say are;

Tyler Conklin, Jets - Middling production with the NYJ and is 29 years old. Primarily used as a safety valve rather than a main target, but is versatile and can catch or block when need. In Kubiak system of 2-3 TE sets, blocking TE's will be a focus.

Harrison Bryant, Raiders - A roleplayer that could come cheap. He's young (25) but was hardly used in LV, prior he was with the Browns where he averaged 230 yards (a year) receiving. Not gonna stretch the field, but once again he brings in versatile option as he was used primarily in block sets.

Mike Gesicki, Bengals - Getting long in the tooth (29), but has been fairly consistent throughout his career and has been primarily a vertical threat. Don't know much about his blocking skills, but a pass catching threat at TE would be sorely needed with this team.

Juwan Johnson, Saints - The most obvious choice of a free agent acquisition. Kubiak was Juwan's OC last seasons, no one is gonna know his system better and I don't think Kubiak would trust any one as much. Not overly complicated, a vet that knows the ropes and can help as a teacher to other TEs along. He's 28 which is solid, had a career high in receptions (50) and yards (548) last seasons, though while not flashy it puts his numbers the same as Fant who is much more expensive.
