When your defense stops the opposing team on the goal line, and you have the ball inside the 2 or 3....you intentionally take the safety. Especially when you have a large lead.
Because otherwise, even if you don't fumble or get intercepted, what normally happens is kicking out of the EZ to give the opposing team a short field. Likely starting at the 40 or even 30. Which is basically a FG.
You are trading 2 points for 3 (or 7) in what you are giving up. And you are resetting the field position so they have to move the length of the field - burning clock.
We have now done this twice, asking our defense to make impossible stops AFTER making many impossible stops
