Been a LONG time since I've been here. Almost forgot it existed.
I like how our defense is shaping up, and we've added some nice pieces. I really like the brain power with MM and LF calling the shots, especially since we have four games a year against two of the best offensive play callers in the league in McVay and Shannahan. It feels like we're no longer completely overmatched from a strategical standpoint, which is a great thing.
I really think the best move of the offseason was the Kubiak hire. MM has worked with both Harbaughs, and he has obviously embraced their love of pounding the rock, and he needed a play caller that can make it work. Kubiak comes from the Shannahan tree, with the modified run-heavy WCO, which is exactly what we needed. It requires lighter, more mobile offensive linemen that can get to the second level to execute their blocks. I sincerely hope we can finally turn the offensive line into an area of strength, because it's been a serious weakness for the past fifteen years.
Which brings me to Sam Darnold. His last two games showed that he can't handle a blitz. We've been spoiled over the years with Russ and Geno being so good under duress, and IMO, Darold is a downgrade from Geno for that reason. If our line can't protect him, this season could get ugly in a hurry.
With that being said, I honestly think our running game is going to be A LOT better, because I do think the line will be a vastly improved run blocking unit. If they do that, it makes play action a lot more effective.
Run the ball, play physical defense, and don't turn the ball over. Simple recipe for success. I'll go with 10-7 for 2025.
