The Seahawks need to be careful here, this is the biggest haul they will have for a longtime and if they blow these picks on guys like Collier, Brooks, Taylor, McDowell, and Blair, etc again. (Their recent draft history on defense is abysmal. Sold the farm for Adams, too.)

Pete in no normal organization would be allowed to continue to fail at this historic level, in drafting, development, and scheme for this many seasons. They have so many assets thrown at this defense, spending even more picks at it is not going to fix it when their issues are clearly systemic.

The Seahawks have not many 1st, 2nd, & 3rd round players drafted on offense in the previous 5 drafts ('22 they drafted mostly offense) because they've been blowing these picks on their defense as they've been trying to rebuild it for 5 years. Giving them more picks is not the answer until they fix what's going on at the top.

First 3 Rounds All Defensive players selected:
'17 Malik McDowell
'17 Shaq Griffin
'17 Lano Hill
'17 Naz Jones

'18 Rasheem Green

'19 LJ Collier
'19 Marquis Blair
'19 Cody Barton

'20 Jordyn Brooks
'20 Darrell Taylor

'21 (Jamal Adams Trade)

The Seahawks have drafted much better but have made way fewer picks on offense. in the first 3 rounds.

'17 Ethan Pocic

'18 Rashaad Penny

'19 DK Metcalf

'20 Damien Lewis

'21 Dee Eskridge

How can you trust Pete to pick the players he needs for his defense at this point? It's crazy to think this is even on the table as a possibility.

If Pete is still here going into the next draft, I propose all early picks are offensive players. Better to draft players who can actually play rather than a bunch of busts.

Two 1sts and Two 2nds based on recent draft history gets you -> LJ Collier, Jordyn Brooks, Darrell Taylor, & Marquis Blair.

*EDIT* Updated OP: Mistakenly listed Penny Hart instead of Dee Eskridge in '21.
You bring facts and the Pete homers just bring blind devotion. I think a lot of the people on this board are the kind of people that would be the foot soldiers of an aurhtoterian regime. They just blindly follow the leader no matter what and attack anyone who points out how the system fails. Thanks for trying to bring some reality to this place. It's a thankless job.

We do have to remember that the Seahawks have been a perennial playoff team and have traded away a lot of draft picks. I’m not sure how many folks think Hall of Fame defensive players come out of the later rounds but it’s not many.

It is surprising that we haven’t drafted better at linebacker but we haven’t devoted a lot of resources there either.

But yes this is an important draft for the Seahawks. If they select another Bruce Irvin there’s going to be trouble.
They have won ONE playoff game in the last 5 years. That's not impressive.

Nobody said it was. But it leaves you with a late first round pick every year.
If you draft well, that late pick can be an impact player. The Hawks have made horrible choices. The best first-round pick they made between 2018 and 2022 was Jordyn Brooks and he's just meh. We need to stop making excuses for the failures of Pete and John.

Pete or John nobody knows I think.
Can't argue with your fact though about bad choices.... Percy Harvin ( John) Jimmy G (John) Jamal Adams (Pete). List could go on. This year was good, next year draft if the cant make a team, might be time to roll some heads

Sure it's better to have a high pick, but let's not act like anyone drafted outside the top of the first can't stay on a roster and contribute, maybe even be a valued starter if not an all-pro. It's just that lately ours can't.

It's not that they can't - it's just that they usually don't. League-wide hit rate well under 50% pick 17 overall and later.

This does not excuse everything.

There are teams drafting in the top ten each year with bad defense and bad offense.

It’s hard to know how bad the drafting is when the defensive coaching has been bad going back to Kris Richard.

Most good defenses are built around at least one top 15 pick. Like Nick Bosa, Fletcher Cox, Micah Parsons, Pat Surtain II.

But I would agree there have been a lot of misfires. Collier and Malik McDowell were bad picks but they were also late first early second guys. The hit rate is much lower.

Their first-round picks from 2018 to 2022 where Rashad Penny, LJ Collier, Jordyn Brooks, and trading the pick for Jamal Adams. One could be VERY generous and say that they hit on Brooks (I wouldn't say that, but let's be favorable). That's well below 50%.

The drafting is only a part of the equation , there is then the development. I wonder how many guys weren't developed properly, not out 'n out busts?

When the Seahawks draft a CB I am confident Pete can develop them. When the Seahawks draft a DL, I have no confidence in Hurtt (The Tom Cable of Defense) can develop them.

As we're getting closer to the draft and it's looking like Seattle will have a top 5 pick. I have no issue with it being a DL, because OT and QB are off the table. So you kinda have to go DL.

However, the other 1st and 2nd rd picks should be spent on offense. The Seahawks have a very good track record drafting offense high (Eskridge aside) in recent drafts. Penny, Metcalf, Cross, and Walker.

I propose to fix the defense with Free Agency (Guys you know can play), and the top 5 pick.

The absolute worst case scenario for me is they draft defensive heavy, they still suck, and we're told "What'd you expect, they're rookies?!" Allowing the failure to continue.

I want no excuses. Go get Free Agents that you know can play and fit, so we can see if this scheme actually works. And to get a proper evaluation of these coaches. Then go defensive heavy in the '24 draft once confirmed to build it out.

Yes because everyone knew that Penny would be an injury problem despite being a serious impact player while healthy.

Penny was considered a 2nd or 3rd rounder and taking him in the first was viewed as a huge reach. If you reach for a player and the player ends up injury prone, that's not a good draft pick. We could have had Nick Chubb but got cute and it bit us in the ass.

Yeah, but you're also advocating for poor process yourself by endorsing taking a running back in the first who had his knee atomic bombed in college.

Slow down and try to be a bit consistent with your logic here. Easy to say this crap in hindsight, but it would've been stupid at the time. That sort of thing usually doesn't work out like it has for Chubb.

I don't get why people harp on the Penny thing while crying for Chubb. He plays like the absolute best back in the league when he plays. They were dead on the money on his talent, and his injury sheet was spotless coming in.

Point at a bad pick like Collier if you actually wanna have a solid argument, I mean come on lol

Penny played well for 5 games in his contract season. Don't try to claim that he's better than he is. At the time of the draft, people said that Chubb was fine. He was drafted very high in the second round. The scouting reports were right about him. The "bad process" was that our medical team got it wrong and reached for the injury-prone back instead of taking the better back who was fine. Your just making excuses for how horribly this team has drafted.

Leading rusher in the nation and never injured was "reaching"? Penny was not damaged goods when we got him. I don't think it is fair to criticize the FO for not being Nostradamus...not that Nostradamus got everything perfect either, unless you manipulate his verbiage.

Yep. Everyone said Penny was fine, too. Great analysis, bud!

I'm not claiming he's better than he is. He's averaged nearly 6 damn yards per carry in his career. You'd have to have your head buried under a metric asston of sand to claim he hasn't been an obvious star in every stretch of play he's ever been healthy for.

This hindsight judging is asinine. Like I said, you have several REAL examples of bad picks to reference. You don't have to make crap up. It just devalues the rest of what you're saying. Obvious agenda.

Bust for sure. He wasn’t projected to go in the 1st. They reached getting cute. Nick Chubb went early 2nd. He can’t stay healthy either. Some really good players went in the next 20 picks that would have changed a lot about future drafting if we hit on guys like darius Leonard or Harold Landry or chubb and a few others. Even getting edmunds maybe we don’t do the stupid Adams trade

Agreed, but it's not difficult to find RB who's a "serious impact player" when picking one that high though. It's more surprising when a RB taken in the 1st or 2nd round doesn't perform well
