Completely agree with you, and there was a shift in authority for a couple of years before Pete got fired. We only heard rumors, but the change in the quality of the draft was unmistakable.
True.

My theory was that they were transitioning PC out of leadership a season (possibly 2) before they let him go. That's why the drafts started to look different . PC acted like it was all part of the plan but I'm sure he saw the writing on the wall.

Too late.

I don't know if I agree--this is all speculation on both sides, but I see Pete's fingerprints all over picks like Witherspoon and Charbonnet.

Fair enough. Those 2 do in fact pass the eye test for a Pete type player. And yes , I can only speculate . My point is that the team made an undeniable shift in a different direction and my theory is that they started clipping PCs wings a year or two before he took his talents to Las Vegas.

If there's one thing I think most of us can agree on is that PC was not a good GM.
Yep. Great coach and one or two great drafts. He did gut the team when he came in but it was necessary at the time but the drafting after the LOB peak was sub par and even worse after that.

I don't know how much truth there is to this, but I've heard/read that PC was familiar with bunch of the players that ended up on that LOB team from his days as HC and recruiter at USC. I think I remember him thinking highly of Marshawn, Sherman, Earl, and some others before he became HC of the Hawks. I heard some mention that that knowledge base/familiarity with such players naturally exhausted itself over time, and his value as draft/talent evaluator diminished somewhat as well over time.

I don't know. It does somewhat provide an explanation for how quickly they put that talented LOB team together.

I think there is a lot of truth to that.

I don't necessarily disagree with you. Just playing devil's advocate, but they could have been JS's picks as well.. I definitely agree that the drafts got better in those last two years.

Pete was still the coach, and every coach has some input on roster construction and drafting.

However, there was a distinct change in both the overall direction, and success, of our drafts for a couple of years before he was officially fired.

Even before the change, it was rumored that Pete was being was being constrained.

If I were a betting man, I would bet that, behind the scenes, Pete’s final say over John was quietly removed, at least in terms of drafting.

Ozzie Newsome and John Harbaugh have been the example to try and emulate building a winning roster. It feels (to me) like JS/PC was different and JS/MM is similar.

JS has done a great job of turning a 3rd round pick from 2012 into Cross, Mafe, Spoon, and Hall. One could also argue that JSN would not be a Seahawk if not for the 2022 trade of Russell Wilson. Because of that trade, they got Spoon with the 5th pick and JSN fell in that draft. Picking JSN was a complete luxury pick at the time. He was picked with the Seahawks own pick, but without the RW trade who knows who they would have gotten.
That’s five solid cornerstone types of players on both sides of the LOS garnered from that trade. Even though Drew Lock left and came back, he was also part of the trade.
So we can thank Me3 for being a big part of this team. Russ…the gift that keeps on giving! The greatest 3rd round pick in team history…brought us 12 years of (mostly) exciting success and how many more years of continued growth and winning. The 3rd round pick that keeps on producing!!
"luxury pick" is neverhow I thought about JSN, it was more like, omg, a great player fell to our pick through a happy sequence of flukey events.
