I've never been a big Taijuan fan. He is too inconsistent. Until he can put it together and prove otherwise, I think he is no more than a "potential" guy, a guy where we say "next year will be his year." I would not trust him to start a playoff game, because like Chapow mentioned, you never know what kind of performance you are going to get from him. Everyone in Seattle seems to think he is the next Felix, but I think that's very far-fetched. This is now his 3rd year with the team. At some point you either have it or you don't. I know he is only 23 years of age, but you could say the same with Ackley, Smoak, etc. IMO it isn't about age, it is about how much playing time you've had at the big league level. There are plenty of better young arms in baseball that Taijuan, I think most of the national hype on him has cooled quite a bit. If there was a time to trade him, it was probably last year. I think when it is all said and done, Paxton will have the better MLB career than Taijuan.

What's Servais' deal with Nuno? He's only made one appearance since his emergency start close to two weeks ago. Nuno has clearly been the M's strongest reliever this year. And in a game to keep it close in the division with the Astros against said Astros, he goes to Benoit in an extremely high leverage situation. Benoit is awful. Just awful. Scott needs to utilize the bullpen to their strengths. And it's ridiculous how he just handed the long relief role immediately to Karns. Karns hasn't earned shit.

Aaaand swept by the Astros. Man Houston is the Ms' kryptonite.

Looks to me like a .500 season is about the best we can hope for. Still a far cry better than last year.

Very characteristic of the Mariners; win outside of the division yet unable to win divisional series.

Have to learn how to beat Houston/Texas or there is little playoff chance. Have a 3 game series against Houston right after the break. Need to prove we can beat them, injured or not.

All the talk about pitching is fine, and accurate, but I'd sure like to see them stop flailing wildly at pitches in the dirt with the winning runs in scoring position.

Cruz and Lee both? Those were two of the most pathetic at bats I've seen, and that's not the first time this year. :34853_doh:

The way Cruz and lee swung at those breaking balls way outside the plate....ill never understand. I think only 1 strike was thrown to Cruz yet he struck out. Lee's last 2 swing and misses were balls way off the plate. Why would the pitcher even think about throwing an actual strike? The entire Baltimore series we were disciplined at the plate and worked the count. Big moments during this series we did not. You can't go up there and start swinging at every damn pitch. Patience fellas. Patience.

Cruz was on another planet last night. Those swings were some of the worst I've ever seen in 63 years on the planet.

I admired the way they came back, but man a few of the M's pitchers are pretty bad.

I like Cishek, but man, that pisses me off. He's becoming a liability in the closer role. He's probably better suited for the pen. But honestly, there is no better option right now.

well if he cant close, he def cant come out of the pen and be effective. That made no sense.

I'm done with SeaSick. It's time to go.

Come on, bruh. Closer and reliever are two totally roles. A closer needs to be able to handle himself with aplomb in the highest leverage situations. An innings reliever doesn't have the same high stakes pressure.

SeaSick has like 2 pitches though. I simply don't think he has the stuff to succeed in this league

The team just isn't that good. Our offense will keep us around .500, but the pitching will hold us back from making a run at the wild card. We have horrible starting pitching right now and an awful bullpen to go with it.

He definitely has the stuff to succeed as demonstrated by the .186 average hitters have against him. He has one huge problem, he has no control quite often. When he has control he mows them down. When he doesn't he walks guys but more importantly falls behind in the count and has to groove pitches. He also misses with his pitches he is attempting to put on the corners of the plate and ends up putting them in the middle. If he could solve his control he would be great. Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be a possibility at this point because he is what he is. If I was the mariners pitching coach I would completely focus on his control even if it meant taking a couple miles off his fastball.

Batting Average against is a lousy stat though in Sischek's case.
When he misses he misses by a mile. So it's either a meatball down the middle of its a foot and a half off the plate.
And all of his meatballs get hammered. The problem with strictly side arm pitchers is they usually miss side to side not up and down. As a batter you just have to sit on the pitch down the middle of the plate.

I know this goes against baseball's conventional wisdom but I'd go with Diaz as a closer despite just being called up.

Past couple of outings I have wondered why not just leave Diaz in? Sure, he's young, but Cishek has been very, shall we say, inconsistent. Not something you want in a closer.
