I know, don't get too far ahead of yourself, but on paper, appears that the Mariners SHOULD prevail.

I can still hear the chant of the Yankee fans in 2001 during the 116 win season - " OVER-RATED!"

To be honest, I'm just grateful for the season the Mariners have had so far. I'm here marking time until the Seahawks season begins. It's more fun to see the Mariners being competitive than watching them slip farther and farther from a post-season playoff berth.
Great post, much better than the gloom and doom after a couple losses.Winning is just fun even if it's not world series type baseball,it could happen eventually.

I am definitely just going with the flow. It's the first time in a long time the M's were still competitive this close to June, and I'm enjoying it. Stats and sabermetrics don't win games, players and coaches do. ;)

Yeah, some here are way too intense either with saber metrics or just expectations.

If you're a fan of the Ms just enjoy the ride... This team is both fun and competitive...just be thankful the dead period until foozball starts its not going to be as dull of a grind in past years.

Mariners are aiming to carry the citys spirit as best they can for as long as they can. Theyve done a damn good job thus far.

The Mariners record by Pythagorean wins right now is 24-16, meaning that Seattle's current 23-17 record is actually a game worse than it should have been with average luck. In other words, don't expect a huge regression for this team, if they keep pushing their current run differential rate all season, they project to win 97 games.

The only part of this team that feels like it is overachieving is the rotation, and to a lesser extent, the bullpen. Cano having a career year is helping too. Basically, this Mariners team is looking like a better version of what last year's team was hyped to be.

My only real worry is that some divisional opponent will get white hot after the all star break which seems to happen every year. But if they don't, then 88 wins will probably win the division this year, and Seattle should be able to hit that number barring a total collapse.

Adam Lind over the past two weeks: .835 OPS
Adam Lind over the last 7 days: 1.046 OPS

I really hope this means his bat is back. Lengthening the lineup means more runs.

Sabermetrics tends to like the Mariners when they are good and not like them when they are bad. Pecota had Seattle penciled in for one of the highest win totals in the American league before the season even started, whereas most Mariners fans were struck with Seattle sports syndrome and just assumed 2016 would be another losing campaign.

The Advanced stats like Seattle even more right now than they did before the season. Seattle is genuinely playing very good baseball.

It feels good right now. Just need to keep wrapping up the series wins this month. I do worry about next months schedule though. It looks hard but the optimist in me sees it as a chance to put space between us and the Rangers when we play them in 2 series.

As much as I feel confident, I hate the fact that the media are giving some fans a hard time for not being on the hype train yet. It really is a case of battered fan syndrome at play and I don't blame people after such a long play off drought who don't want to get hurt or are skeptical.

I'm sure many Seahawks fans weren't on board until after the Chicago game in Wilsons rookie season. Even in the super bowl year you had people being vocal about how the hawks would find a way to blow it.

I think Safeco will be bouncing and filled if this team keeps up the form in the next month or so.

God the reds bullpen sucks. Their starting pitcher did okay and it looked like one of those frustrsting games until he started getting over 100 pitches. Once the other pitchers came in the Mariners opened the floodgates.

Cano hit by pitch w/ bases loaded - 2nd time this game. I recall games when Sweet Lou was Manager - there would be retribution. Has the PC virus infected our National pastime? In fact, I am unaware of any arguments or Servais being tossed this season. Lou made it an art form. Bless his heart.

I miss those days - Lou racing out to confront umpire - his face purple and 4" from ump. Sometimes the umpires would laugh - and that made Lou even more angry. I wish we could have transcript of what he said.

My favorite was called by Dave Niehaus while Lou was on a rampage- " Mount Pinella is erupting - lava is flowing from both ears".
Anyone recall the game when Mariners were in Tampa and Lou had his parents with seats right behind the plate? About midway thru game, he went off - ended up on his knees as he brushed dirt in a pile on top of home plate - umpire standing w/ hands on hips, Dan Wilson there w/ gear, and camera shot of Lou's parents just sitting there. After game, Dan said " Lou told the umpire since he wasn't using the plate to call Balls and Strikes, let's just cover it up".

Sweet Lou - never be another like him. :(

Sabermetrics are here to stay, and for good reason. I don't know a lot about these stats but enjoy learning how they are tilting the game. You better believe every team in the league has a department of statisticians that they lean heavily on. If you don't like these "new" stats and like the M's, I'd probably suggest getting just a tad familiar with them, as Jerry Dipoto and Scott Servais will construct the roster based off of what advanced stats say.

I know doom and gloom is a bit tough to read at times, but cut people a break when they get down. Everyone is here in this thread because on some level, they really like the M's. But let's be honest - the M's have put together two (2!) .500 seasons in the past 15 years, and haven't made the playoffs since 2001. Hell, the best pitcher in this team's history has never pitched in a postseason game. It comes with the territory of being a fan. I notice that the casual fans are very cheery, but for those of us who have loved this team for the better part of our lives, it's easy to get a bit disappointed when things go south, and they tend to go south very quickly with this team. It's baseball.

On pace for around 98 wins. This team is good. I'll keep enjoy them but I am keeping my optimism in check a bit.

I doubt that there is a team in baseball history that wanted to retaliate for a batter being HBP with the bases loaded. There couldnt be a more unintentional play in baseball. The RBI is the retribution.

Pretty much all the Ms need going forward to really improve their chances of playing beyond 162 games this season are three things: 1) King Felix ups his strikeouts, 2) Iwakuma gets a grip on the runs given up, and 3) the performance output of everything else remains more or less unchanged. Realizing all three would bode well, I'd think.

It's great that the Mariners are winning. It seems strange that the two worst pitchers in the rotation (on paper), Miley and Karns, have the most wins. Both are at 4 wins each. Hopefully Felix can get back to his correct form. His last two outings haven't been great. Iwakuma always seems to start slow so that may another case of that for him.

I'm worried Iwakuma is getting past it. I've not been that impressed with him this year and wonder if he'll end up becoming a reliever by years end.

I've been impressed by Montgomery and Vincent so far. If they don't bring Paxton up this year I wouldn't mind seeing Montgomery get a chance in the starting rotation.

I honestly don't think the hits on Cano were deliberate, just bad pitching. If there was malice in it I think Servais would have been out there. He didn't think twice to confront the Rangers coach during the Rangers game earlier in the season.

I'm starting to like this O'Malley kid. Hasn't done much with the bat yet, but seems to make a good utility fielder that can fill in at different spots and get the job done. Looking like the kind of bench player that could be very valuable.
