Tate blew it.... Plain and simple! But I doubt that the NFL will change the rules to disallow TD's. I think this is the NFL trying to stop taunting with threats.

This has happened many times and nobody has suggested a rule change. Then the Seahawks do it...WE BETTER CHANGE THE RULES! That's just disgusting.

The NFL has the rule correct right now. Don't take away a TD...that's WAY too harsh of a penalty for something so minor as taunting. Taunting isn't even a safety issue.

If this hadn't happened during a MNF game...I doubt there would be as big of a deal about it. Just like the Fail Mary.

I wonder what play or call everyone is going to cry about after we play the Saints?

if Tom brady did that they would have given him an 2 extra points.

If Tom Brady made the play Tate did they should give him an extra touchdown not just two points. No way Brady could ever catch and run that in.

So, the guy from Denver does it for 40 yards and it's no big deal. A Seahawk does it, and the media acts like he stabbed someone. Nice

My take is simple; Tate should have been focused on scoring the TD, then commit the taunting to his own personal delight.

As it was, he slowed his progress to the goal enough to allow the defender to get a shove on him before he crossed the line. He clearly had to re-adjust and tight-rope a little to get in. This is the ONLY problem I had with that play.

His antics nearly turned an easy TD into a barely-crossing-in-bounds TD. THAT is what Pete should be mad about, and THAT is the real issue. From a sportsmanship perspective, it's not the best example for young players to see. I am part of the "act like you've been there before" crowd and would prefer the work get done before the celebrating/taunting occurs.

Nobody wants to watch the No Fun League and having the element of "what will they do next" adds to the experience. When you start eating your dessert before finishing your vegetables, momma gets mad.

This is absolutely absurd. I can't believe how upset people are about this play. If you were reading the ESPN live chat with all their "Pro" analyst you would have thought Golden Tate just punched a guy in the neck and kicked him in the balls.

We've all seen runners do this thing kind of thing for years, when they know they are gonna score they start running all goofy with long strides waving their arms excessively like a moron. All Tate did was improve upon that formula and look more badass with the same general intentions that all these guys use on a regular basis.

This is a game where you hit the hell out of people, knocking them senseless is your job. And they want to act like a little showboating is the end of the world please.

It's not even like we were blowing them out of the game, that was one hell of an important play he has every right to talk some trash in that situation. I was hoping it might fire up the team which was playing the worst game I've seen since Wilson started.

If that safety caught him on the 1 yard line, AND had the Rams also committed a foul on the same play, then the entire play wouldn't have counted and the down would be replayed due to offsetting penalties. Imagine if that happened. SMH.

This is also why I hate when certain personal fouls negate plays. For example, if a QB throws an interception, but gets hit and draws a roughing call, then the interception is negated. I HATE that!

This is what college does...........cause college kids are still learning how to be grownups.

This is the big boy league, so IMO changing the rule is stupid. But it makes sense for goody two shoes nobodies allowed to embarrass the league Goodell.

This is how dictionary.com defines taunting:

verb (used with object)
1. to reproach in a sarcastic, insulting, or jeering manner; mock.
2. to provoke by taunts; twit.
noun
3. an insulting gibe or sarcasm; scornful reproach or challenge.
4. Obsolete . an object of insulting gibes or scornful reproaches.

I believe that what Tate did was just plain immature. I didn't have an issue with it then and I don't now. Probably because he plays for my team and it was a sorely needed TD. However, the part we don't know and haven't really heard about is what led up to this. If he taunted the defender for no other reason than he is a jerk then so be it. If he taunted the defender because he had been jawing at Tate all game, then that is a different story. Still dumb but understandable.

So if they truely want to eliminate taunting then they need to include muzzles for all players so no verbal assualts are ever committed.
Go ahead and flag Richard Sherman for his sarcastic "u mad bro"! Take away any win if a player says anything hurtful post game. Be a man. Shit happens, people say stuff. Let the play on the field happen.

What Tate did was lame, really lame. As for the excuse "well their grown men let have their fun." If they were really grown men why do such a childish thing? Tate is lacking maturity. Top Pot? Love his play not his childish antics.

I seriously don't see what Tate did as being worse than a lineman standing over a sucked QB beating his chest. What made it idiotic is the fact that Tate should have known that a penalty would be called and that it would put his team at a disadvantage. I sure the Ram's Db's were talking to Tate all game long. Tate decided to talk back with his hand.

Things that don't possibly affect the outcome of the play or the remainder of the game shouldn't be penalties that take points off the board.

Personally after watching Quinn and Long revel in their glorious domination of lesser talent to bury or QB and make a dramatic display every time, I don't have a problem with the taunt. I know people have the opinion of "Score first!" or "he almost got tackled!" but no he didn't. he scored.

I like seeing these guys actually look like they are emotionally invested in playing the game, stop making it sound like the NFL should be some lame sterile branch of the military or something. It's a GAME that dudes play for a living.

Exactly. They need to eliminate all celebration if they are going to start taking away scores.

What Quinn and Long were doing after every play made me just as angry as whatever Tate did to them. It's all taunting. Long smashing the ground as a symbol of sacking Wilson isn't a taunt?

Eliminate it all, or leave it as it is. Officials getting to pick and choose what is taunting and what is not and having the power to remove points is just a disaster.
EXACTLY!!
As soon as the NFL game deciding bufoons decide to take this kind of reciprocation taunt, and blow it out of proportion ,and follow through with that kind of dumb shit penalty, I would love to see ticket sales take a dive, so's to send these assholes a message.
The message?, quit screwing around with the game rules, when there is NO intent to do PHYSICAL DAMAGE to an opposing player.
It pisses me off that everyone who likes to blow this way out of proportion, even our own fans around here, because those son-of- a b!etches that make the rules, will stretch, and wring out, all the fun from the games.
These bastages should spend ALL their spare time figuring out how to keep/limit players from causing physical injuries by playing dirty, not when both sides are smartassing each other out there on the gridiron.
Should be, "Let's Have Some Fun", and "No Harm, No Foul"

DAE see an amazing play by Tate and then find his actions detestable to the point where you question all the decisions you've made in your life up to the point just before Russel threw that pass? Beyond reproach.

I was having pate at Joe Buck's place and he called off the party and sent everyone but the catering staff home after that. We don't do that here Tate. Stay classy.

A lineman standing over a sacked QB celebrating is also an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

You are allowed to celebrate, but you are not allowed to celebrate at the expense of taunting another player. It's a very clear rule, not sure why some of you are having such a hard time with this.

Taking away TDs for taunting is a really bad idea. Tate knows what he did was wrong, but who knows what those Rams were saying to him. I don't care if a player taunts, unsportsmanlike yes, worthy of a longer PAT sure.. but don't be taking points away.

These are big boys. Not pee-wee soccer. By allowing the refs to take points away on a penalty there is just one more thing left to interpret and blow a call because a scoring player raised his hand. No thanks. The refs already have enough control.

Can this be moved to the shack so I can accurately state how I feel about this?

I'm sure it's been said enough, but I'm on board with the 'Taunting Penalties are Stupid' team.

Jeez, we're handing out penalties to grown men for hurting each other's feelings? Oh, but think of the children watching their role models rubbing their junk in the faces of their fallen enemies! Hell, there should be bonus points for particularly demoralizing taunts.
