I didn't even know it was a penalty if the taunt occurred while the play is still going on. Also as others have mentioned if you are going to penalize this then all the sack dances, TD dances, first down arm motions etc.. Need to be penalized as well. No matter how you look at it, it's all taunting.

There is a difference between celebrating (sack dance) and taunting (gyrating your junk in the face of the flattened QB). The difference in Tate's case is holding the ball high as you run into the end zone or leaping into the end zone, or waving at an opposing defender.

The difference is obvious to reasonable people, including most refs.
It should be obvious that the penalty wasn't Tate holding the ball high as he made his way for the endzone, it was the sahking and mouthing off motion he made with his hand back toward the safety.

I think it was called appropriately - tack it on to the next play - it didn't ACTUALLY alter the play - like a hold, nor is it dangerous in the sense of roughing the passer.

Feelings shouldn't be protected IMO - not to the point of changing the score.

Taunting during the play should be a spot foul, IMO. If that's what the NFL is suggesting, then it makes sense to me.

I hope you meant to use this :sarcasm_on:

Nope. No sarcasm. Tate's taunt was completely out of line. He admits it. And the Seahawks suffered little repercussion from it.

You're welcome to your opinion about the taunt being out of line, but the "spot foul" part sort of threw me off, since it basically makes 0 sense to have a spot foul for something that can be called on any member of the offense or defense with or without the ball in their hands.

If this truly starts happening they might lose alot of fans. Absolute immaturity of the NFL to even consider this. This isn't little kids this is grown men and if they can't handle a little taunting then they need to go back to diapers. It was funny when Tate was taunting those guys and considering what he did they had to have been saying a bunch of crap.

That is PFT making something out of nothing.

A lot of (49er fans hoping that the Rams would pull out this game because they can't legitimately win the division without help from other teams, because the Seahawks own their sorry asses) felt that the touchdown shouldn’t have counted [but] a taunting foul is always treated as a dead-ball foul, meaning whatever happened during the play counts, and the foul is enforced on the next play, which would be the kickoff,”

Who is a lot of people? 10?100?1000? Owners? Fans?

The article simply quotes and idea from the NFL head of officiating and states his opinion that the competition should look at it.
These are grown men in a non-injury situation. If the other player needs to wipe his nose he can use one of the million Nike towels on the sideline.

Fixed.

Jesus Christ NFL, let the guys taunt each other. We watch football for entertainment. Don't make football tantamount to a stodgy board meeting high up in a corporate tower filled with crusty old men in suits.

Regardless of how you feel about me. Your opinion here is 100% correct here! and I agree with you fully.

If they start allowing the players to openly taunt each other during the play, count me out. There is no place in any sport, sans boxing, where you can actually shut the guy up, for this nonsense. Get your butt in the end zone and celebrate away. Taunting on the field would only lead to cheap shots and fights, and would trickle down to all levels of the game.

Can't make it a spot foul though. A referee with a stick up his arse could dramatically change the outcome of a game.

This is just the NFL giving its obligatory lip service in order to save face. I'd be surprised if they actually do anything.

It's also worth mentioning that this is only the opinion of the head ref. The competition committee hasn't actually spoken on anything yet.

I don't think this is a huge deal let them play, we took our lumps and got our penalty people need to move on. I think the reason its a big deal is because it was monday night football. Tate just has a nack to stir up Controversy on monday night.

Go Hawks!

This is why COLLEGE football blows with all these asinine rule. I hope to heaven they don't "Adopt" the college rule because that's ludicrous.

Sure we want sportsmanship. But to sit there and say oh let's make believe that play never occurred because the guys is acting like a tool.

absolutely stupid.

Uh huh. You wanted this noise. You suck.

The NFL actually CELEBRATES Sherman's trash talking. What makes it different from Tate?

Sherman is actually a good case study. When does celebrating become taunting? What's worse? Dancing with the cheerleaders or spinning a ball that accidentally hit the opposition's foot?

Which one really makes you mad to see on the big screen as an opposing player?

This is the same league that flagged Wes Welker for making a snow angel in the end zone and fined him $10,000. Trent Williams got less for punching Sherman in the face after the game. The NFL could really take a page or two from the CFL when it comes to FUN.

I don't have a problem with any of it. I thought it was pretty cool when Long did the Ric Flair thing after a sack. It was funny. Then, Thurmond did it after a sack of Clemens. It showed creativity and a little gamesmanship.

I'm a defensive guy. I like watching a hard hitting slug fest as much as I find a 43-38 somewhat ridiculous and boring. yes, I said Boring....I think 11 TD's in a game dilutes the excitement of scoring.

So I get a bit pissed at the NFL for favoring the offensive side of the ball so heavily the last few years. Refs aren't our favorite people overall, and introducing tons of subjective penalties is also ruining the game. Then, when you've pushed the entire league towards scoring more, for ENTERTAINMENT value, you penalize the players for showing personality and creativity when they do score.

TO's stuff and Ochocinco's stuff was entertaining. People were watching to see what other crazy stuff they did. It's one of the biggest hypocrasies in the NFL and I hope Goodell is reading all this stuff because it's ridiculous.

Guess they have to draw the line somewhere...

Who would have known making a waving gesture would get everyone's panties bunched up. :Dunno:

Random thoughts:

1. The NFL needs to chill out. Excessive penalties are ruining games, not just ours.
2. Refs do not belong on playing cards and should therefore stop making themselves a bigger part of games.
3. Golden Tate is an idiot. A gifted idiot, yes, but that little display was pretty bush league. He has every right to celebrate with team members, chest bump, even do a little jig, but for gawd's sake, get into the end zone first. I was almost...ALMOST...wanting him to trip and fall before scoring just to teach him a lesson.

The idea of a "spot" foul almost makes sense to me, but see items #1 and #2 above. The last think I want is for some douche ref to interpret a sideline scamper to stay in bounds as "taunting" and take away a critical touchdown at a key moment.
