Ozzy seems like the Ozzy of old with Lodeiro beside him. Seems way more assured.

Defense isn't getting exposed as much, although i'd be interested in seeing how they dealt with Zardes pace if he had played.

Is it possible to trade for an MLS striker at this time of year? Anyone worth picking up? I figure we won't get another DP in but would love to see someone young and if possible fast add some depth. The type RSL, Dallas, Portland etc get without breaking the bank. Valdez just asked to be subbed off and Gomez doesn't bring much to the table.

Lodeiro just carve LA open and Morris missed a sitter. Should have gave it to Dempsey lol.

How did we not win that game. For gods sake Alfaro and Fisher need to start for Evans and Mears next week. Morris need to learn how to us his left foot.

If Tyrone Mears is interested in being a spectator then he should buy a ticket like the rest of us....he cost the sounders 3pts today. Then there's Jordan Morris who can't finish a goal from less than a yard out...oh well on the bright side they didn't lose.

But, I like the Lodeiro signing, He will add an element and flexibility for the new manager.
I guess for the purpose of this conversation, I've got to ask, what do you consider a star?

Lodeiro is considered one of the top 3 players in Primera, and one of the faces of the league. He's been a core player in multiple World Cups, and Copa America, on a highly regarded team. He was listed as one the best players in Latin america this year by Fifa.

IMO he is a star.

Ignoring how Seattle has played as a team. On paper, this is the most talented team I can remember... Keep in mind that doesn't mean they are gonna fit, and play well together. I'm speaking solely on individual talent, relative to other MLS teams.

The Sounders ideal 11 includes - 3 time defender of the year Chad Marshall. Panama captain and best defender in Concacaf, Roman Torres (who if signed in 2012 would have been a DP). Fringe USMNT player and Sounders Captain Brad Evans (at RB).

Ozzie Alsono, the current highest rated player in MLS. Alvaro Fernandez who according to you hasn't "lit the world alight since 2012" which may be true, but in terms of talent he's a top 15 CM in MLS.

Lodeiro. Former ANT Captain, Andreas Ivanschitz. Clint... Dempsey. Jordan Morris. Nelson Valdez.

This team, talent wise, wasn't possible 2 years ago.

For the purpose of this conversation it would be best if you gained some perspective...

You're evaluating a player's value ("star") on his stature in a league much, much smaller than the one he is joining. Lodeiro is not a "star" player. he may be a big deal in the Argentinian league, but he is not a "star." Hell, if that's your basis, I'm a "star" in my men's league.

Suggesting this dumpster fire of a roster is somehow filled with talent when you can clearly see by results they are not is a perception i also don't understand. You are citing names as if they are still at the highest anyone has ever viewed the player, but ignoring their current form. It's odd to me to do that. Lodeiro was not a "key" player for a poor Uruguay team in the most recent Copa America. And any strength he provided that team as an impact player was years ago. Dempsey is off the mark and has been for some time. Morris has gone from budding star to struggling youngster. Alonso, regardless of whatever rating metric you are trying to use, has been overmatched in the middle of the park for over a year. Fernandez is only a top 15 CM in the MLS if you somehow got a time machine and brought back the 2011 version. Even then, he's a wide mid. But it doesn't help your team to assert the names on your roster with their better days, especially when many have seen them gone, and others don't look likely to reach them.

The roster, like management, needs an overhaul. If you want to pretend all of these players are still at their zenith, or in Morris' case still worth the expectations that greeted him at the start of the season then so be it. I don't think many are looking through the same veil.

Im not purposefully trying to be harsh to bring you down. But the players on this roster are not the players they used to be, or could be. Hope is a good thing, and Lodeiro may add quality to a squad that desperately needs it. But the team will need much, much more than the 2016 versions of these players
I don't think you are being harsh, or bringing me down, we disagree on a one very key thing. I judge the team from an individual context, and you judge them from a team context.

I guess I don't understand your definition of star. So being one of the best players on a good national team, the best player in one of the best leagues, and having name recognition on a global level, isn't a star? by that rhetoric everyone not named Messi or Ronaldo isn't a star.

You are basing your entire view of the Sounders on how they've played collectively this year. I'm judging them individually.

You talk about Lodeiro not being a key player recently, but outside of being injured and unfit to play major minutes in this years Copa, you are 100% wrong about him, Uruguay's coach considers him the key to unlocking the defense, Uncle Si not so much...

I can't defend Dempsey. He's been royally screw by formation and roster construction, but he's gotta play better, does that mean Dempsey is done? No he's showed with the national teams that he can score .60 goals per match which is respectable. He's declining, but he is still a talented difference maker.

Disagree on Alonso. Metrics provide evidence that he completes 90% of his passes, doesn't turn the ball over, and the Sounders give up almost 1 goal less when he plays. Now we can argue about metrics all we want, however, he's still among if not one of the best CM's in MLS.

I'm guessing you haven't seen Fernandez play in MLS since 2011, so you're basing the entirety of your opinion of him on that. Fernandez had some Injuries leading up to the 2016 season and only played in 3 games, so let's look at what he was just a year ago. He was a starter (at CM) and played in 44 games, had 3 goals and 5 assists, respectable numbers for a CM on one of the top 5 teams in Argentina. He's only 30, so there is no reason to believe he cannot regain that form.

You can read every post I've had about Morris, I'm one of the few whose criticized him, even when he was doing well. That doesn't mean he has some how lost any and all ability, and I think we'd both agree you don't move on from Morris, that would be mental.

This is where I think we fundamentally disagree. I've always felt Seattle's struggles came from a lack of a creative force in the middle (my thoughts are all over this thread on that subject). Seattle has that player now, and I believe we will finally see the talent Seattle has flourish.

You could see evidence of that in today's game. Lodeiro is capable of hitting that through ball down the teeth, and my god has this team needed that. Suddenly, the Sounders actually look dangerous... Now if only Jordan Morris could make better decisions...

Night and Day difference from the team today. They players seemed to want the ball, moved to get it, and for the most part, defended pretty well. Ozzie and Roldan made it very easy for the front 4 to interchange and move around. The 4231 looked pretty good. I thought we were pretty good all game. Valdez actually put in a really good shift. He won the ball up top, held up play, and helped create some chances.

I'm not sure the Gomez sub was the right one, but we still got some chances when he was on.

Morris missed about 3 or 4 chances today....He's young and that can happen. Hopefully he snaps out of it.

Can we end the Evans at CB experiment ffs.

and put in who?

Neither Evans or Scott should be starting CB's on any MLS club, and I called out Lagerwey back in spring for not going out and at least getting a journeyman CB until Torres was healthy.

Good news is Lodeiro was the best player on the pitch yesterday, in his first match. So as bad as this season's been, I'm excited to see how much better we can be now that we have someone like Lodeiro's first class distributing and instincts in the midfield. Dude was all over the place, I loved it. Imagine that, a fluid offensive attack!

It's easy to single out Evans and Scott but the whole Sounders back line is horrible. Mears and Jones aren't helping the team any either. Mears is the one who cost the Sounders 3pts yesterday. He let his guy get behind him for an easy goal and was standing there watching. That is unacceptable. The Sounders played well only for a brainfart from Mears to ruin what should have been a win.

Fair criticism, but any good backline starts in the middle. You just can't have two journeyman players trying to play such an important position like CB, especially two that are past their prime AND playing out of position.

Center defenders in soccer are like catchers or safeties, it's virtually impossible to just throw someone in those positions and expect them to play well without having those years and years of experience at the position.

Hence why i'd like to see Alfaro at CB, Evans or Fisher at RB until Torres ever comes back. I don't blame Evans for not being a great CB, he just has moments where he plays like a CM at CB, not his fault he gets put there but its far from ideal. Surely to god we can trade for a competent MLS defender, i'm guessing we didn't before as we thought Torres would be back by now. I remember at the start of the season the Front office saying he was weeks away, wonder if those weeks became months.

I'm with you. At least Alfaro is young, and has the pace and potential to develop into at least a competent backup at center back. Continuing to play two old dudes who stink and who probably won't even be on the club next year isn't helping develop anything.

That's true that it's never a good strategy to have players play out of position. However, a fair amount of goals that the Sounders have given up have come from the sides. Just like the one LA scored yesterday.

Marshall - 2 clubs.
Evans - 2 Clubs.
Scott - 1 club.

Far from journeymen...

That's so true. Especially Mears side. He's let people go past him unmarked all season.

The centerback position is probably the easiest, tactically, to learn. You have very good CMs and CDMs who have extended their careers by moving into the backline.

The goal I saw scored came about from a lack of pressure from the central midfield. A player was allowed to cut in, and without pressure, pick out a very dangerous pass inside penalty spot. Some lack of communication from the keeper and a complete shut down by the back led to the goal.

Lodeiro looked positive in his first start, exactly what the Sounders need from their. Patient in possession, dangerous in the counter. Gave them good balance. (it's shocking what just a little possession gives an MLS game). However, that two deep CM pairing will need to be overhauled soon, as well as the CBs, wingbacks and probably a new winger. Morris (there's your three points lost right there) should be running through the middle of the field.

I'd say the Sounders will need to look at a system change (cue "formation doesn't matter" crowd) that will allow a player like Lodeiro more opportunities to interplay with a player like Morris. I didn't mind the 3 CAM set up (used well by Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid) but the 6 and 8 roles need to be more impactful in the long run. Your 8 got the goal, but the position was lost when Galaxy scored.

They did play a new formation this weekend, a 4-2-3-1.................with Lodeiro, Dempsey and Morris underneath Valdez. That's why Lodeiro had so much freedom to be all over the place, cause he had Ozzie and Roldan as two defensive mids behind him.

The downside of this formation was what we saw with LA's goal, once there's a breakdown past the three offensive mids, there's a LOT of space out wide with only two defensive mids.

I'd actually like to see Flaco in this formation, since he's really our only true winger.

You don't use a true winger, or converted forward, in this setup. You use 3 CAMs, with two tucked in (atleast in the variety they used the other day). You are trying to find central players who will pick up out wider and cut in. Like a Ribery/Robben at Bayern, or Mikh and Reus at Dortmund, Sanchez and Ozil at Arsenal. Not true wingers but left/right CAMs. you also need very dynamic outside backs.

The two CMS (6 and 8 ) are supposed to be able to cover any transitions behind the attacking 4, with 6 back. It's not a formation issue but a personnel. While a goal was scored from that position, both were left way off the pace in conceding.

Now, if the Sounders want to play a 4-2-3 wide-1, with true wingers, then Lodeiro would not be a 7 or 11 but more of a 10. I'd say Morris moves to 9 in that, Valdez goes to the bench, Dempsey moves to some other team and you find yourself some true pacey wide players.

Anyways, I don't know much about the Sounders outside these names. Maybe those players exist on the roster. I do enjoy the tactical discussions.
