Well, 2016 is officially a lost year. Crashed out of the CCL in the quarters, crashed out of the US Open Cup in the quarters, on pace for a record low scoring season and a last place finish in the Western Conference. Sigi just needs to swallow his pride and start playing all the youngsters the rest of the year so they can get some real experience for the new manager next year.

Still think they'll go safe and promote Schmetzer.

Not saying Schmetzer would be a bad fit, he's well respected by the owners and players. But if the Sounders fancy themselves as the global 1st class club that the owners and GM keep telling us they are, then they're going to set their ambitions bigger than Schmetzer me thinks.

I'm surprised they fielded such a weak team.

Might as well just play kids now and give them the experience. Looks like Beeker is coming back. Seems a bit pointless now, especially if there is a summer overhaul and a new coach doesn't want him... unless he is just signing till the end of the season.

Except for Kovar, suspected broken clavicle.

That sucks, cause he was really playing well.

Do they really try and market themselves as a "global first class club?" Not trying to troll the fragile feelings of the Sounders fans here, but that's less ambition and more hyperbole.

I mean i feel there are like 10-14 teams in the world that may qualify for that, with clubs much, much bigger than Seattle Sounders FC still not scratching that surface.

Not that I have seen. I think that comes from a very small but very vocal (and out of touch) minority of fans, not the club.

Man, you sure are awfully condescending in a lot of your posts in this thread. Makes it pretty hard to believe that you're not trying to troll the "fragile feelings" of the Sounders fans here.

I'm just puking up what the Sounders brass use to say, specifically Roth and Hanauer. They've said from day one they want to be one of the best clubs on the planet, not just the MLS.

Whether that's a bunch of hot air or not you can decide..........just using it as a point of reference as to why I don't think giving Schmetzer the manager job would happen. Not high profile or sexy enough for this club IMO.

Global first class club is a super vague statement.

What qualifies a club as such? Are currently successful teams like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid that? Arguably they aren't first class run as they have debt that would make small nations blush or just spend their way to success.

Is it fan attendance? Stadium atmosphere. That would discount Man City, Chelsea who don't have big stadiums or history of success but lots of money.

Do teams with long histories of success qualify who cannot compete with the big spending clubs these days but pull off the odd shock result in recent times e.g. Ajax, Celtic, Benfica, Dortmund who have big stadiums and have all won the European Cup/CL in their history and been in numerous finals.

Is it mid table/lower EPL teams who have histories of mediocrity but now have lots of money to spend and tv exposure from the marketing the EPL no gets but do nothing in Europe.

Do LA Galaxy qualify since they are successful and can sometimes attract players that EPL teams want?

I've heard it occasionally from the Sounders, usually in reference to their attendance or atmosphere at games. Might have heard them say they aspire to it when they signed Dempsey/Martins

You hear it all the time with the Seahawks though but that's obvious. Highest pro league, great facilities, attendance fans, players, coach etc

There's a pretty big difference between saying that you WANT to be, or ASPIRE to be, a global first class club and saying that you ARE a global first class club.

FTR, I don't recall the club ever saying that they ARE a global first class club.

I think it's more to what Glasgow lined out. Facilities, fans, atmosphere, commitment to winning, supporter groups, first class treatment of players and fans, etc.

In this regard it's hard to argue. But best meaning competing on the pitch with other top clubs? Ummm...........no.

Global is fairly easy to identify, and I do not think that any MLS team, or any of the other clubs mentioned outside a Dortmund, would be considered that. I don't think there are more than 10-14 that would consider themselves a global brand to be honest.

First class can be a bit more subjective. However, again, organization, structure, facilities, supporters, etc. would be the main attributes. And again, here teams from the MLS are not going to be "first class" in competing with teams elsewhere. LA has done some nice things, but in terms of how they would even compete with an Everton or Swansea, Ajax, Celtic, Benfica, etc. I think they've got a way to go.

Not to belittle semantics though, because I do agree that Seattle needs to be very ambitious in their next managerial appointment. Perhaps "first class" can be valued against other MLS teams. In that, Seattle must be near the top?

Ozzie Alonso is currently the highest rated player in MLS (7.5 out of 10) through 19 games. Crazy to think I (and many others) wanted to move on after last year.

Sounds like Lodeiro and Fernandez will be signed sometime next week. If Seattle can gel quickly and sneak into the playoffs, they'd be one of the deepest team in recent memory.

At least we avoided being the first team in MLS history to not record a shot in a game...

Lol, what?

There is zero chance this team makes the playoffs. We are SO BAD. Morcambe FC could beat us right now.

I assume you mean shot, and calling that a shot is being extremely generous considering it didn't come within 10 yards of the goal. It was a cross. If you mean shit, their first one of those came a hell of a lot earlier than the 88th minute. This was the worst performance I've ever seen from Seattle. No hustle, no communication, no urgency, no heart. Anyone thinking a new signing or two at this point is going to turn the season around is delusional. The front office needs to completely overhaul the roster and coaching staff.

The Sounders have become the team that other MLS teams want to play...because it means an easy 3pts for them.

Even Sigi has given up on the season. It showed today when, down 2 at the half, he takes off two attacking players in Gomez & Friberg and sends on two center backs in Scott & Alfaro. As much as Zach Scott has meant to this franchise in the past, he should never, EVER, see the pitch outside of preseason or early Open Cup matches.
