Hope that's four years on top of his contract year like Thomas's was, but I suspect it may not be since Sherm's final year of his rookie deal pays him peanuts.
Of course it is an extension. The big signing bonus takes care of this year's paltry salary.

It's pretty common to rip up the final year of the current contract in working out an extension. Anyway, I hope you're right.

Thomas's final year was not ripped up, he just got a big chunk of his signing bonus to make up the difference. So I assume the same game plan contract wise will be used for Sherman.

It not only helps keep this year's cap number friendly, but it becomes a TRUE extension. If you rip up this year, then it's not an extension, and you lose a year on the deal.
I don't think with the new CBA that they can touch the final year of these contracts.

Woot, looks like I won the Sherman prediction thread for guarantee, even though we all underestimated; haha.

Don't think so. It's a $11.7M over 5 years. Depends on which way you want to look at it. I always considered this year as "part" of the new deal. Sherm and his agent get to call it $14M over 4 years. Another win/win.

I believe Kam had the last year of his previous deal re-done when he signed his extension, so that's not true.

I was thinking it would be in the low to mid $50 million range, so it's a little higher than I suspected...and just WOW at $40 million guaranteed.

It will be similar to Thomas. Next year he'll make the 1.4ish million he was Due + Signing bonus. Then the cap number will be prorated over the life of the contract for cap purposes. They won't be ripping up the final year.

I said "guarantee". Check the thread, I guessed $38m, next nearest was $35m; nobody was higher.

It is alot but given it can be spread over 5 years it makes the whole contract cheap. Especially given his rookie deal and the impending raise in the cap over next 2-3 years.

This looks like a great deal. My eyes bugged out when I first did the math and found it to be over $14m/year, but since it's an extension this will work out well. I assume it was structured intelligently, because c'mon now, John Schneider doesn't do things any other way.

Chunk of that could be an "injury" guarantee ala Harvin, which isn't really a guarantee at all.

This is another epically good contract from Schneider, both Earls and Thomas's contracts averaged out are lower than multi-year equivalents we'll see in the next couple years, and they're the best in the game. The timing of them is also pretty apt as the cap will only go up and we've locked them into the normal prime for football players (25-29) with many possible outs contract wise if they're injured or don't perform as well in the future.

Basically Schneider is a genius and we should easily be able to afford Wilson next year as well as a few other mid-strong performing free agents I think.

Yeah when you consider this year he was only making a little over 1M .. it makes it look a lot better.

I guarantee if Sherman hit FA, he'd have gotten more than a 5-year deal paying 11M and change per year. Guessing they will structure it in a way to take advantage of his 2014 salary being so low

Ah, my mistake. Like I mentioned in a previous post, the "true" guarantee isn't really settled until we know how much is guaranteed for skill+injury or just for injury. I believe both Harvin and Thomas had their "guarantee" numbers inflated with injury guarantees, which rarely ever come into play.
