Screen Plays?

I know its easy to second guess Darrell Bevell on my couch, but where were the screen plays? Your o-line is getting blown into RW's face almost every play and not even a one?

We attempted a few. Carolina's defense was keying in on the screen as they rushed around the edge, so I think we opted to just grind it out and protect the football. Thing is, if a screen play is intercepted, it's almost assuredly going to be a pick six.

It's a good point but a lot of what I hear game plan wise with percy harvin will involve a lot of screens, so if they really doubt RW in giving up interceptions on screens they better work it out. Carolinas pass rush held the edge against RW running pretty well so I'm not sure how they could hold the edge against him in the pocket, looking at him, while running backwards to cover a screen. They were good I just don't think that good. From what I saw we only had 2 WR screens and both those were handled by DB's, but I might be remembering wrong.

They were blitzing a lot this game. Very aggressive pass rushing.

Work best yes, they by no means would have been breakout TD plays, but 4 yards is better than a RW sack, and maybe keeping the DEs a little more hesitant.

They tried it a once or twice, but, it didn't work. Plus, their LB's we're flying from sideline to sideline. Because of that, I don't really think a standard RB screen would've helped much.

The screen game always progresses as the season does. Exploit attrition and specific LB's as your gametape builds.

I noticed we didn't stop banging our heads against a brick wall in terms of play calling until about the end of the 3rd quarter. Quick passes to fullbacks near the sidelines, deep throws, and some designed rollouts...They worked beautifully once we started using them.

This is off memory, but I think that's by design. Pound and lean on them, then make them cover sideline to sideline. Also, those plays seem to be adjustments to what the defense is doing, in-game, not on film.

At least, that's what I've told myself about Bevell.

Relax! We did what we had to do to win! They played a highly agressive high risk d against us. If we needed to score more points to win we could have play called differently. However, that would mean higher risk of turn overs. You saw a glimpse of the lets score points play calling in the 4th when we called back to back to back fb flat passes. Otherwise, if we can keep the o on the field for 3+ min per possession and hold them on d then it makes sense to be conservative. You dont try to score a td every play!

Carolina knew we were a better team.coming in and they game planned as the underdog. They did what they needed to do to have the best chance at winning. That chance was forcing the hawk o into calling risky plays. Luckily we didnt need to do much that to win.
