We all saw it.

Charbs WIDE OPEN for TD

? Is for our X&O gurus

What happened?

Was Zach not a top read, did something specific happen to cause Sam to not see him?

Obviously it matters not, but that seemed to be a no brainer.

I’m not down on Sam by any means, just extremely curious about that specific play.

He said in his post game press conference that he saw him, and just didn't pull the trigger in time. I think he hesitated just a touch and then the defender made up the ground, Sam knew he couldn't force the ball at that point. He said he needed to just trust his eyes and let the ball go immediately.

ultimately then i can totally appreciate him playing it safe when realizing his hesitation caused the play to be dead essentially. huge growth there

Yeah. He admitted he hesitated and knew that he lost his chance, and that if he still threw it there was a chance it would be either knocked away or picked off.

He got sacked which is preferable to forcing it and risking a turnover.

I have not seen the post game pressers yet.

Wasn’t aware that he addressed that particular play.

I’m happy to know he’s aware, and I suspect that Zach wasn’t his first read on that play.

I think the turnovers are still rattling around in his head. He's dialed down his first impulse a bit to counter that.
Once he can flush his mind of that, he'll do better.
But yeah, I do appreciate a missed play or stalled drive over a turnover. Mostly.

Agreed. No knock on Sam…but, Zach was wide open.

I’m 100% under the impression that Sam still has some cobwebs from a turnover perspective. You saw it during that play. You see it in our playcalling (3rd and 17…run play- which was the game breaker imo).

Now, most would advocate for him to play a little ‘looser’. But, I think MM and Kubiak are keeping a tight leash on him.

Sounds negative…but, I truly don’t mean it in a bad way. This team…if Sam puts up similar numbers through the playoffs, we don’t lose.

We don’t need 350 yards, 4 TDs from Sam. Don’t get me wrong, I’d take it. But if he can keep up the efficiency and have a stat line like 20 of 24, 200 yards..no TDs..no INTs…we win.

Blah blah…he definitely should’ve hit Char-Bone.

I’m guessing Charb was the check down play. Usually routes to the flat are a last resort after all the coverage has been dragged down field. In this play design, IMO, it is designed to funnel coverage towards the left corner in order for the pick routes to open on the left side. However, this left Charb, one on one with the defense for a split second or two before the defense can pick up Charb. However, going through progressions, Darnold, was looking at that left side and had not anticipated the defense to be open on the right side. This play is only great for this defensive coverage and that split moment, as this is primarily a timing throw to the receiver (Charbonnet) and if it isn’t timed correctly or the throw is not perfect to the outside corner, it could possibly, be picked off should the defense keep eyes the QB and the QB stares down the route.

In the end, Charb, scores on the run on that next drive and Seattle ultimately wins the game. You can bet defensive coordinators are studying this play and know it might be called in the future and the tailback is the primary first read. Timing will be everything with this play design.

Our O line is ranked 23rd or so? As that improves we'll also see Sam improve.
This should be a big focus in the offseason.

I think he was obliviously told that it's paramount that he protect the ball this game, which explains the heavy run game plan. He barely needed to throw ladt night, which worked out perfectly.

I want to know why Sam didn't hit Charbs in the endzone..he was wide open, but Sam passed on it and took the sack. It doesn't matter now..but I was all up walking around the room wondering..why?

There's another thread where this is being discussed in more detail.

I wondered the same watching live but sometimes I think a quarterback just doesn’t see the whole field at all times, especially when under pressure
