So the Seahawks didn't want Okung or Beachum for around 5M each next season?

Let's bet avatars on it. If he goes back to the Hawks its a draw. If he nets a 4th or higher comp pick you get to pick my avatar for a month, and if he nets a 5th round or lower comp pick I get to pick your avatar for a month. :th2thumbs:

OK, deal . . . that sounds fair.

Unfortunately, we will not know the official results for a year. But at least I will enjoy lording the comp projections over you.

Hey Popeye,

What do you want your avatar to be?

Hate to tell you, but sounds more like a $5m first year deal with a bunch of option years. I'd imagine that would change the compensation equation quite a bit.

How is that the poison pill all over again?

Because it's essentially a ream him from behind "prove it deal" that will probably net the the Broncos a 3rd or 4th Round comp pick, while giving the Seahawks nothing.

If you remember from the Patriots team option with Darrelle Revis, they were able to circumvent the rule that prohibits comp picks for players coming off one-year contracts and thereby gain the 2nd highest comp pick in this year's draft.

Actually you weren't and that pisses me off more than losing Okung or Russ to an eventual decapitation. You win more than your team, bastard.

I do remember that, I have never heard of it referred to it as the poison pill. Only poison pill I remember being called so specifically by name was the Steve Hutchinson deal.

It's not an actual "poison pill," which was outlawed by the league. It's the metaphorical equivalent, i.e. strange contract language that skirts the rules to screw us over again.

The worst part of this for me:

They said that for two years about our QB situation and said we had to draft a QB in the first round. Last I checked we never do what the "experts" say we should do.

This doesn't concern me a bit. We were getting killed until Okung went out against the Panthers. He goes out and our offense all of a sudden starts to do somethings. He was a decent LT, definitely not a break the bank LT. Obviously our FO thought the same thing or they would have tried to extend him last year.

I know it isn't an actual poison pill, neither was the Revis situation. Part of why I was confused. I see this less as a poison pill and more of Okung betting on himself when a bigger contract wasn't on the table. It is only a "reaming" if you assume he had something better -- which he clearly didn't.[/quote

The nonsense language added to the end of the contract, giving the team an option that they won't exercise in exchange for gaining an unwarranted comp pick, is what I was referring to.

Like with the poison pill, the league should absolutely get rid of this comp pick loophole. Refusing to exercise the option is not much different than releasing the player. Teams like New England and now Denver will be unfairly compensated for what amount to one-year contracts.

Whatever you think of this deal for this specific player, there is still a gigantic hole on the roster. I don't see any contingencies here besides blind faith in the #26 overall pick.
The Broncos won the SB with Ryan Harris starting, which should make you feel a bit better.

Despite Kony Ealy having the greatest statistical defensive game in Super Bowl history.

Once the details came out, not a bad deal for the Broncos. Pay $5M to a recovering Ryan Clady or $5M for a recovering Okung. Bob Condotta is saying the Seahawks didn't have a deal on the table for Okung which is interesting to say the least.

Okung just needs to put in a solid year and he is getting $12M/yr the following 4 seasons. Though I wonder if there is any bonus money when the option if/when the option is picked up by the Broncos?

$10.6 million per year it looks like. Not bad for a guy representing himself! No ways we could've matched that. Hopefully we're able to find someone to fill his place with comparable play.
Realistically it's nowhere near 10m/yr

The "penalty prone" thing is such a fiction.

He average less penalties last year than 35 other tackles, including Joe Thomas, Tyron Smith, Trent Williams, Jason Peters, Andrew Whitworth, Lane Johnson and just about any other "elite" OT you can name.

I wish we could've kept him, but I don't blame him for wanting a clean start. Dude caught so much undeserved flack.
Postpartum denial is something you can always count on 'round here!

Actually I could see it being that if he plays a whole year. We don't Know the escalators, but if Okungmakes it 16 games, He likely gets all of that, followed by 12 million per year.

He got what John Clayton has been predicting for weeks, a one year prove it deal. But he also got all the escalators, so good for him.

$5 million for a LT is dirt cheap. It makes sense that we didn't have any offer on the table if he could be had on a $5 million deal.

JS/PC moved on long ago it seems, and so will I. Next.

I agree and the contract should be treated the same way for both teams involved. If Denver declines the option but is eligible for a comp pick then the league is saying that it was indeed a 5 year contract and not a 1 year contract. That means that the Seahawks should still net a 3rd or 4th round compensatory pick based on the terms of the 5 year contract. But if Seahawks only get a 5th or 6th then the league is saying that it's only a 1 year, $5M contract and therefore Denver shouldn't be eligible for any compensation.

Anyway it's disappointing that Okung will be playing for $5M next year and it's not for the Seahawks. He should really fire his agent.

Yeah, if he makes through the 1st yr healthy, he gets 7m including the bonus. Nothing guaranteed after that, so basically an upper-scale 1yr prove it deal.

Harris only gave up 3 sacks all season and none in the SB. He did allow Ealy to get a hand on Manning's arm causing a fumble though.

HOOORAYYY!!! Glad the drama is over!!

I'm glad Okung got paid, and I'm really appreciative of everything he did here for us. It's too bad he was marred by injuries, now watch him be injury free at Denver :D

Good luck Okung, and Godspeed. You deserve it! Denver overpaid, but that's fine by me. Comp picks!!

Problem with this is that it's pretty much a 4th rounder, not a third, unless Denver tanks it.
