It really aggravates me that we spend so much money on the Oline coach and invest so much draft capital in an Oline that continually underperforms. So how is it that other teams seem to take scrubs and rush for 100 yards and getting rushing TDs like it's no big deal while keeping their QB's uniform clean.

What's the answer? A new Oline coach? Someone else to select these offensive linemen? Or is it becuase we devote so much attention to the run game over everything else?

"And the continuity will suffer, they said. But the Patriots offense has scored more points (119) through three weeks than ever before, and Tom Brady is 3-0 without an interception for the first time in his career. It must not be bothering the franchise quarterback.

The innovative tactic is resonating throughout the sport, too.

“I think it’s one of the smartest things I’ve ever seen,” legendary Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett said.

“It’s genius.”"

The Patriots have used nine different offensive line combinations to start 30 series this season, excluding kneel-downs. Check out tomorrow's Herald for the reasons behind the line rotations, and why the strategy could catch on around the league.

Here’s a look at how the offense has fared behind each combo.

Solder-Mason-Andrews-Kline-Vollmer: 9 series, 65 plays, 433 yards (6.7 yards per play), 30 points (3.3 points per series), 3 TDs, 3 FGs, 2 punts, 1 turnover on downs

Solder-Kline-Andrews-Jackson-Vollmer: 6 series, 35 plays, 263 yards (7.5 yards per play), 35 points (5.8 points per series), 5 TDs, 1 punt

Rather than attributing it to this strategy by the Pats, I think the differences are:

1) the Patriots don't really run much to begin with and when they do they do so out of singleback sets w/ the defense spread out anyway (run blocking doesn't need to be as good)

2) like the other top QBs in the NFL (Manning, Rodgers), Brady gets the ball out really, really quickly so their pass blocking doesn't need to hold up nearly as much as it does for most other teams.

Agreed. Rodgers get rid of the ball so quickly and the way Packers were executing screen/quick passes on MNF especially to Cobb, I don't even know how is it possible for any O-lineman to look bad in that offense. If the protection does break down, then Rodgers uses his feet to find an open receiver.

Seahawks invest so much draft capital in an Oline? Huh? In the last four years, until this year, Seahawks have drafted only one offensive linemen above the 7th Round (not including Garrett Scott, who was drafted in the 6th Round but never played due to a heart condition).

Overall, the Seahawks are 30th in offensive line spending:

The Patriots are 13th in offensive line spending, a little above average, with $7 million more dedicated to the offensive line than the Seahawks.

Seahawks should start seeing dividends on this year's draft class with three offensive linemen by next year I think. Patriots drafted three offensive linemen in 2014, and five in the last two years, which has been critical for them.
