It's interesting to note we were the least penalized team in 2005 .. (raised eyebrow)

And then we were cheated out of our first Super Bowl victory thanks to the NFL refs.

Hey guys!

TB currently have 106 penalties / 1000 yards.
We are second with 104 penalties / 976 yards.
St Louis are third with 100 penalties / 807 yards.
Miami are the least penalised - 50 penalties / 466 yards.

Our opponents have given away 74 penalties / 708 yards so our net count of -30 is the worst in the league.

57 of our penalties have been on the O and 47 on the D.

I'm not blaming the refs for our SB loss. We could have and should have played better. Just like we happily take the Fail Mary from the GB game and tell their fans they shouldn't have let their QB get sacked 8 times in the first half. Yeah. there were a lot of things we could have improved on in the SB.

Anyway, as for this game. i think it'll be a rude awakening for the team, and I'm at least glad we got it now. We have everyone's attention, we're a very aggressive (and borderline dirty) team. Our gameplan is to test the refs on what they will or won't call. Now they're making the calls...actually not even now, they have been. Like your topic title itself we're the "number two most penalized team in the NFL". It's time to clean up. We gave them too many 1st downs and gave up too many 1st downs because of defensive/offensive holding. Let's clean that crap up, finish this season out 3 and 3, get HFA and get to the damn SB.

Getting penalties was a huge deal to piss off Holmgren. That is one of the main reasons we were the least penalized team.

The main thing I have been getting irritated with from the refs is a call on us, then a virtually identical thing done by the opposing team and no call. There were several of those instances in the Colts game. Their guys could tackle our receivers while the ball was coming to them and no call. I just want the calls to be even you call ours you damn well better call them too.

The penalty monkee is the one thing that has not been excised or apparently even addressed this season. I cant say every week, but just about every week I bitch about all the penalties and this time it cost us a win. Penalties kill drives and in a defensive battle like that was, you have to make the most of your opportunities, and you cant do that from the bench. Gotta re-watch the game before I can honestly say what happened.

It's also a huge deal to Pete, that's why he talks about limiting penalties ad nauseum at his pressers.

The difference is the 2005 team was a small fast finesse style team, and this team is a thuggish (mean that in a good way) hyper aggressive intimidating style of team. Well that style comes with a price, a lot of penalties.

Having said this, I can handle the Sherman holding penalties, that's just part of how our DB's play. But I CAN'T handle the stupid offensive holding, hands to the face or Schoefield's boneheaded running into the punt returner penalties. Those type of penalties are the ones that can't happen.

Does the league refs let other teams have liberties the Hawks are not equally afforded? That is my question.

The answer is yes mostly in terms of offensive and defensive PI and holding. I see most of the good teams WR's get away with a push off and nothing is said same on defense .

Great point.

We play the ragged edge. We just do. It backfires sometimes.

THe offensive holding calls are the ones that piss me off. most of the rest are the cost of doing business.

Actually, anything procedural or formation-wise drives me nuts. It's just poor discipline and nothing else.

Everyone gets beat and holding is usually either poor technique or an OLman trying to save his QB, which I don't fault them.

The other one that gets my goat is ST penalties. Seriously, if you don't have the block, don't do it.....it's still one guy trying to tackle on other guy in space, but a block in the back or hold is almost guaranteed to lose you 10 yards.

I can understand some defensive penalties because we are a physical defense. Its going to come with the territory, but controversial calls versus wrong calls is what irks me. On offense we should have very few, holding calls can happen here and there, if your not Walter Jones that is. False starts, bad alignments, should not be happening this far into the season.

I think this is inexcusable simply because its really starting to hurt us I don't care if were 15-20th but 31st is not ok. The reason I say 15th to 20th is ok is because there are going to be penalties on the defense with the physical style they play with.

Do it enough and make it obvious, so the little stuff won't get flagged/noticed later in the game.

"Do it enough and they'll eventually stop calling it." I dunno how true that statement was, but it doesn't seem to be an issue for Seattle unless it's brought up. They are responsible for the two loses, sure, just a bit. But, Seattle should know better than to put themselves in a situation to lose because of them. Which I believe they've been doing a good job of this year, 11-2...pretty dang good.

Without even looking at the penalty rankings I would guess that the "finesse" teams are towards the bottom and the "physical" teams are towards the top.

We always play just on the edge of breaking the rules, and with a play style like that comes penalties. There's also a lot of young players that are going to be up in peoples faces, getting unnecessary roughness calls, talking trash and getting involved in things after the play. I agree though that I think we need to work on some discipline, but playing a tough and physical game has gotten us to 11-2 and we are quite honestly top contenders for the Super Bowl. Whatever we're doing, it's working and working well. I wouldn't change much.
