Yeah, I doubt we go guard with our first pick as well.
I think guard should be the first pick. A lot of the action at Mobile right now is okay, but I don't really think there's a lot of consistent "WOW" factor, other than some splash plays. Zabel comes to mind as people really praising him when I thought so far he looked really okay, there were a few reps where he got bullied.

If you're at 18 and Booker or Jackson are there, and you've been preaching about fixing the Oline then you have to take one of these guys. They are beasts and it'll be the first time since Hutchinson that we had a monster at guard that will set the tone for the run game. I don't doubt there is talent later on, but I think those two are non-negotiable at 18.

I have my doubts about either player in a ZBS, you need to draft a player that will fit your system. I do think the system that Kubiak runs will make the existing OL better no more 5&7 step drops out of shotgun

I think Booker would be the harder one in a ZBS, which is why I float to Jackson. For being 6'4" and 320lbs, dude is built. From the reports I've been reading he could fit in a ZBS, despite his size he is athletic. I think his combine scores will give us a better idea obviously. To me, Jackson is my 1st pick as of now.

Tyler Booker, Donovan Jackson, and Jonah Savaiinaea are probably the best three pure guards to be considered. The possibility of any of them making it to 18 is slim considering every team needs a pure guard.

Tyler Booker and Donovan Jackson strike me as a lot like Anthony Bradford. Powerful but limited lateral movement and redirect.

Jonah Savalinoea, on the other hand, looks to be more athletic for zone blocking and redirect. Plus, he's got right tackle / right guard versatility.

To be clear if they have a guard they love at 18 I have zero issue with them taking their guy.
It's just not what I would expect.

I don't expect it either. I think John will talk himself in to getting OL maybe at round 2, but most likely 4-7 and over compensate by drafting 2-3 in those later rounds.

I just don't think they will spring for a guard in round one unless they are convinced he is special. Maybe they will who knows.
From what I read last year they would have selected Fuaga and played him at guard. So it's not like they would never do it. It just has to be someone they are convinced is worth that high of a pick for that position.

Why a guard? We also need an injury free, reliable RT.
Guard because guard is by far the teams worst situation on the Oline. Haynes, Bradford, Tomlinson, and every other person slipped into guard this year have been a disaster. When Lucas came back, both LT and RT for the most part were held down.

Sure, the team needs to draft Oline in general, but first and foremost they need a guard that can lock down their position and stop playing musical chairs at the position like they did throughout the season.

2001 draft. #17 overall.
Steve Hutchinson HOF.
I loved the pick as soon as they made it. I remember reading an article soon after the draft where Mike Holmgren‘s wife called him up after they made that pick and she told him that was a good one.

Highly drafted guards have been very hit or miss more recently, but I suppose that's true for many positions.

Going against the grain here, I thinks it's extremely foolish to reach on a guard here in the 1st, unless you can tell me that guard is best player available. Our offensive roster is a mess and, frankly, if a GM can't find a starting nfl guard in the 2nd rd or so, he should be evaluated himself

A mess? How so?
