I think Murphy explodes next year and ends up the better player. I thought I read he had the best win rate of any rookie this year but just didn’t get to finish many plays? If that’s true he’s close

Is Verse playing nose tackle? Seems like they put Murphy there out of necessity

I wouldn't do it just eat on 1 year. We could easily be having the same conversation at this time next year saying Murphy was clearly the better player.

Verse plays the same position as Nwosu, Mafe, and Hall. It is doubtful Verse would even start on this team.

Murphy plays the same position as Travis Jones on the Ravens, and they both have very similar rookie stats. Jones beat out Michael Pierce (before Pierce was injured).

So yes, Murphy all the way. Also, Murphy is only 22 so we may get get 10-12 years out of him.

I don't believe that suggesting you might have made a different selection with the gift of hindsight is tantamount to declaring Murphy a mistake. There were 240 players selected after Byron; chances were always very slim that he would end up being the very best pick that could have been made in that circumstance. When a smart person is fortunate to get to do something for a second time, they take the new information and data points into consideration to make a more informed decision, rather than blindly making the same choice as before out of ego or whatever.

Regardless, Murphy showed enough promise that I seriously doubt anyone involved is lamenting being "stuck" with him, so to say. Missing out on Verse probably doesn't signal a failure of anything, as I'm guessing there's a good chance they liked both, but just liked Murphy better, which is absolutely how they should be making picks.

Where it could be a failure is if they really didn't like Verse as a prospect for some reason, and then they would need to ask themselves what they were missing with him and hopefully learn from it. Id also consider it a failure if they liked Verse significantly more than Murphy, but just opted for what they felt was the bigger need. That seems unlikely though, as Schneider was just a year removed from using first round picks on Witherspoon and JSN despite the availability of good players at bigger need positions. We're fortunate they did, because those two represent our most foundational player on both sides of the ball.

Maybe Verse just fits better with the Clams and Murphy fits better with the Hawks?
The Rams made it no secret that they were very much interested in Murphy. Nobody got "stuck"

Both teams got good players. Still not sure why it always has to be a competition and/or comparison with every pick. Just like with Spoon and Carter. Both teams got a hell of a player.

And yes, I know it's football discussion, just seems like complaining about something we don't have, when we actually HAVE something good.

Would you take Verse over Murphy? Or in the long run will Murphy be the better pick?
I wrote down who I wanted on a piece of paper and gave it to my boss before the draft started. I wrote down Jared Verse, but if I am being honest, not cause I thought he was better than Byron, but because I was pretty damn sure Byron was going to be off the board by pick 16.

lol we do the same stuff at work too. I've been right on a few guys and get to rub it in for a few years and also wildly wrong at times too haha. I predicted we would get Wilson and he would start so I milked that for as long as I could.

We kicked the can too far down the road with the trenches. Murphy II made the most sense. I still think it does.

Murphy had the least amount of snaps among those edge guys taken around him, played NT on a defense desperately trying to shore up the porous run defense. I'd have to see him off the edge like Big Cat before I'm crowning anybody.

But I'll give credit where credit is do, Verse had an amazing rookie year. Chop Robinson and Laiatu Latu had decent rookie years too.

Same here. In a previous comment in this thread, I posted a link to a thread I created about taking Jared Verse.

100% done with the assumption that Murphy wouldn’t be available at 16.

Verse had a great rookie season.

I think Murphy has the higher ceiling. Happy to have him on the Hawks for sure.

I was happy with the Murphy pick and couldn't believe we got him. It was him or Verse in my opinion and I thought Murphy filled a bigger need. It's hard to determine how they each would have done if the picks were swapped. How much of Verse's success is a result of playing with a pretty damn good defensive line and scheme. I can't say that I watched a ton of Rams football but how many times was he double teamed or chip blocked? Would that number have gone up and lessened his production if he was playing with the Hawks D-line minus Murphy? I don't know the stats but just from watching it seems like Murphy gets doubled a lot and still is able to make plays. Similar situation to the Carter vs Spoon debate. How much did playing with a dominant D line did Carter gain from playing for the Eagles as opposed to being on the Hawks? I will admit though at the time I was secretly hoping for a Carter pick, just worried about his maturity and drive(which could still come into play in the future).
