Here is the quote from Terron Armstead about Jared Verse that I referred to earlier, when he was asked about the toughest edge rushers he faced:

"No. 1, he was a rookie from the Rams. That young boy Jared Verse? I'm cool. I'm good. I never gotta see that man again," Armstead said. "I'm OK with never seeing that young man again in my life. Bull rush different. Dawg, it's different. You know that it's coming. You brace yourself. He's different. Jared Verse is different. He will be a Defensive Player of the Year one of these days. Mark my words."

Pretty strong words coming from someone who had played against some pretty good edge rushers.

This is JUST FOR FUN, and answering someone other than Murphy does NOT mean you no longer believe in Murphy. Just a thought exercise. Put on your GM hat. If given the option to turn back time, do you still take Murphy or do you perhaps take another player?

I look forward to this creating some interesting discussion - hopefully football based without any shit-slinging or allegations of blasphemy.

Personally, I agreed with the choice of Murphy at the time and still think he's quite good, but I might take Verse, who was my second choice and has hit in a way I didn't expect. Hard decision, but I think I'd go Verse. It's close.
The problem with this question, and the Murphy pick in general, is that it was set in motion the year before when the Seahawks failed to select Jalen Carter, the best DT in years, and opted to go with a really good CB, but not a game changer (he just isn’t - he brings great energy but has never shown himself to be a shut-down corner worthy of the #5 pick in the draft.). This choice left the team with a hole at DT that needed to be filled. He Carter been taken, then they would have been able to take Verse there instead.

Brings great energy? That must be why he is a 2 time pro bowler already. Carter only has one pro bowl because of a lack of energy I guess. Ask yourself. How often do rookie corners make the pro bowl, especially in the pacific northwest? Witherspoon is a playmaker, he is one of the best corners against he run and top 10 in coverage averaged over the last 2 seasons. Last year he did have a drop off in coverage, but he was sill good (13th).

yet Rookie year vs rookie year. Murphy better run defender, about the same pressure rate.

Playing along with the impossible and knowing what we know now, I voted Verse while still acknowledging the value of Murphy. Verse is just an absolute freak. He tilts the field, impacts the game. You've got lineman retiring saying they're glad they don't have to face him anymore. Just being real.

That said, I expect we will witness Murphy's pro level game getting better and better. Idk if the comparison to drafting Verse changes 5 years down the road, but he's got a chance to also be something special in the league.

Edit/additional comment: I didn't expect Verse to have that rookie season and have this much impact. If I was a GM, I would have probably passed on him at the time as well.

Which retired linemen said that?

It was in the news recently. If you have time, Google it. If not, I'll try to find it. (Edit: found link and posted below. Armstead.)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I would have preferred Jaden Daniels over Byron Murphy, as much as I did like the pick.

Look…Spoon is one of my favorite players. Then there’s the whole thing about players fitting certain schemes, having support from their alma matter (like Carter in the Eagles) and lastly, it’s unrealistic to even talk about this….I agree.

I have high hopes for Murphy still too!

But if you laid a trade out right now that sent Spoon and Murphy packing for Carter and Verse…done deal.

If you don’t agree, we aren’t watching the same sport.

Daniels was the #2 pick in that draft.
Yup. Was J/K. I wanted BM. The only other later first round pick that really intrigued me was Brian Thomas. Incredible physical talent for his position. Between BM and Verse...gun to head...probably a slight lean toward Verse, though I'm perfectly content with watching BM's career unfold and hoping for the best.

Verse isn't as impactful on the Seahawks.

His college teammate was taken in round 2 at DT: Fiske. Fiske had 51 QB pressures,, 8.5 sacks, and 2 FFs, 13.2% pressure rate=5th among int DL. Draft one without the other and you won't get the same results. Additionally, Rams led the league on QB pressure from DL stunts. That's not a stat Verse owns. It's the entire line that had to be re-made without Donald.

It's irrelevant to discuss Verse v Murphy. You have to take Seahawks top 3-4 picks to equal Rams round 1 and 2 (Seahawks didn't pick in round 2). Verse and Fiske were a set, not individual pieces. If the Seahawks had picked up the 2nd or 3rd best Edge rusher in 24 along with Murphy, would that have elevated Murphys stats?

Assuming the OL in Seattle makes a notable improvement, it won't be solely a result of Zabel.
