Let’s look at the sales that took place over the last 16 years. Not just real, expected!
Asking AI how long a new NFL owner waits to fire the inherited GM...
"New NFL owners most commonly fire an inherited General Manager immediately or after one season."
TLDR - No other team that underwent a sale had nearly the level of success before the sale that the Seahawks have had. Subsequent to the sale, the Broncos turned it around, and their GM remains on staff, 6 seasons later. While most GM's appear to make it about 2 seasons after the sale, this is highly affected by lack of team success following the sale. Schneider is the best and strongest GM going into a sale, and unless the team absolutely tanks he isn't going anywhere. Even Paton, in Denver, was given a good leash to fix the mistakes of the past.
July, 2023 Commanders - GM Martin Mayhew (fired 1 season after sale) served as advisor to Head Coach Ron Rivera, who had final say. In the two seasons before the sale they had 7 and 8 wins. In the season after the sale, they had 4 wins (with Sam Howell the starter). Rivera was fired and Mayhew replaced in January of 2024. The Redskins had a 12-5 season in their first year under new GM Adam Peters, and HC Dan Quinn.
August, 2022 Broncos - GM George Paton (Still GM 5 seasons later) was signed to the GM position the year prior to the sale, in January of 2021. That season, the team amassed 7 wins, under Vic Fangio. Fangio was fired, and was replaced by Nathaniel Hackett 8 months prior to the sale. 5 months before the sale, Russell Wilson was acquired in a blockbuster trade. In the first season under new ownership, the Broncos won 5 games. Much of the blame was placed on Hackett, which likely saved Paton's job. The next season, under Sean Peyton, they improved to 8 wins. The Walton's faith in Paton and Peyton paid off, as the Broncos dug out from under the weight of the Russell Wilson trade, and constructed a top five roster in the league. In May of this year, Paton was rewarded with a five-year extension.
July, 2018 Panthers - GM Marty Hurney (Fired 2.5 seasons after sale) was brought on as interim GM in July of 2017, and named fulltime GM in February of 2018. After garnering 11 wins in the 2017 season, the Panthers had dismal 7 and 5 win seasons, and were part way through another 5 win season, in 2020, when Hurney was fired. They continue to be mired in misery.
October, 2014 Bills - GM Doug Whaley (fired 3 seasons after sale) was promoted to the GM Position in May of 2013. In his only season before the sale, they won 5 games. Following the sale, the Bills had 9, 8, and 7 win seasons. Despite being signed to an extension in January of 2016, Whaley was let go in April of 2017.
August, 2012 Browns - GM Tom Heckert Jr. (Fired 4 months after sale) was named to the position in January of 2010. The team had 5 and 4 win totals in the two seasons preceding the sale. Heckert was fired in December or 2012, as the Browns were on their way to another 5-win season. Not that it did them any good, but then again, we ARE talking about the hapless Browns here.
August, 2010 Rams - Stan Kroenke bought the remaining 61% of the shares to become the sole owner of the team. GM Billy Devaney (fired 2 seasons after "sale") had been GM since December of 2008, and his teams had win totals of 2, 1 before the sale, and 7, and 2 afterwards. He was fired following the 2011 season.
