What did they say in that article that was wrong at all? Stopping the run of ANY team so that they go one dimensional is the most tried and true defensive philosophy there is. When Green Bay says it about Seattle, it isn't a slight. What do you think they are going to say, we plan to focus on Russell and let Lynch do his thing?

It is a cliche, all teams say they want to stop the run. What they mean is we want to make teams throw in 2nd and ten or 3rd and seven as much as possible. You can't do that giving up 5 on first down. Russell will see plenty of nickel if Lynch can't get going on first down. And Green Bay will see plenty of play action if they commit stopping the run game too much.

If the 49ers and Cardinals had only stopped Lynch, I doubt they would have won. It was how they took away Wilson's escape routes that made Seattle's offense sputter. Arizona and SF had the muscle in the front seven to pull it off, I really doubt Green Bay does.

I'm expecting a 41-24 type win for the Seahawks.

I think this is exactly the case. Containing Wilson is a necessary condition for beating the Seahawks. Containing Wilson while keeping account of Lynch is near impossible. Teams that focus all of their attention on stopping Lynch are likely to lose. Trapping Wilson was more effective last year. However, I think that having a healthy Harvin will make this strategy far more difficult to pull off.

I think K early for the win. Teams that have had success stopping our offense have a front seven that gets penetration. They plug run/passing lanes and don't allow wilson to be as effective. Fortunately those teams have not had an offense that could put up enough points to out do our meager production at that time.
RW is a year smarter and hopefully won't do the 20 yard backward scrambles whereby he attempts to throw it away and realizes to late that he's never left the tackle box. Those are the games our D has proven themselves the winner.

Wow. My first post using game analogy. Flame on. Lol.

The point about all this is that the article states "Packers know the key to beating Seattle is stopping Marshawn Lynch" as if it were some newly discovered, holy grail for beating the Seahawks. The Packers are far from the first to say such a "revelation." It's like saying "I know the secret to getting rich!" yet...why is not everyone rich?? Easier said than done.

As pointed out...teams that DO sell out the stop Lynch are the ones that get thumped! It's all a grand deception. It's what we WANT teams to think! Focus on selling out to stop the run...make your DEFENSE one dimensional (and tire them out in the process)...then get gashed by our underrated passing game! FORCE them to alter their philosophy...then get gashed by our clock eating run game! It's all a brilliant plan that is what makes this team so awesome!

GO HAWKS!!

GO HAWKS!!

This is my exact point starting this thread. Please, Please focus on stopping Lynch... Every time i read something like this, which is every week by the team we're facing, i lick my chops.

Only a couple teams have been truly successful in stopping this offense cold for a whole game, and that's STL and AZ. why because as stated they did stop lynch and they did a good job containing Wilson and closing off his escape routes all the while applying good pocket pressure. Obviously this is what every team wants to do, but you have to have the right scheme and the right personnel to pull this off. All but a handful of teams do not... and that's why we've been successful game in game out.

It's amazing to me that this philosophy is still being adopted. Every team we faced the last two years stated we must stop Lynch to be successful. Which is great in theory, but the outcome of every game was you either stopped him but RW beat you, or you didn't and Lynch and RW beat you. You maybe able to stop one but you'll have a very hard time stopping both. And quite frankly, i think i'd be every bit as focused on the passing game and spying Wilson as i would on lynch.

Yes i understand a successful running game sets up the play action and opens passing lanes, makes the LB's play closer to the line and all but it's pretty much pick your poison with this offense. Denver did a great job stopping Lynch in the SB, they still lost, badly..... we are not a one trick pony anymore, our passing game should be every bit as effective as our running game...... Just my thoughts....

I see your point, but the passing game is really based on teams stopping Lynch. You aren't seeing teams play Nickel all day long like they do against GB, NE or Denver because they need to stop Lynch first. If you don't stop Lynch, game over. Game may still be over if you stop him, but its over before you even start if you don't shut him down.

Teams defend SF the same way.
In our three losses, Lynch ran for 102, 71 and 72 yards. In our SB Blowout, Harvin was the leading rusher with 45 yds.

In our three losses, however, Wilson had three of his 5 worst games. His second worst game was the OT win vs Texas. Lynch ran for 98 yds in that game.

The best chance to stop the Hawks is to stop Wilson, not Lynch.

That's Marvin's (correct) point, you can't stop Wilson without stopping Lynch, or at least containing him. That holds true for almost any NFL QB but especially our offense. When Lynch is ripping off big chunks of yardage, our play-action passing attack is in hog heaven. Even if you go into the game planning on stopping Wilson, you get gashed for a couple of runs and your safeties and linebackers are going to start biting on the run fakes harder, not to mention your DC will say "uh okay for some stupid reason we dared Lynch to beat us and he is....so stop that man."

Saying Wilson should be the focus of the defense because Tjack didn't get us a ring is simplistic. My questions for someone who views that as an argument are: Did Tjack not benefit from the good running game then? Would Tjack have won 7 games with zero rushing attack?

And then yes, once you've at least contained Lynch, you must move on to the 2nd step of beating the Hawks, and that is keeping Wilson from escaping the pocket a while getting some pressure. That takes crazy good front 7s, which is why only the Rams, Panthers, Niners, Cards, Texans can pull it off, and why a team like Denver gets killed. They can get a little pressure, but they can't do it while keeping Wilson in the pocket simultaneously, so he just skips merrily a few steps to the side and passes just as effectively.

But stopping Lynch is the foundation on which you build your plan to beat our team.

Here's the thing, the Saints in the regular season game and the Broncos stopped Lynch and put the Seahawks in second and 3rd and long plays. Wilson didn't see a lot of nickel in those games because they were still focused in stopping Lynch. The effect was a lot of third down conversions. I think teams have to be balanced to have a chance.

Pissing me off you mean to say. This game is far closer then it has ANY right to be thanks to our boneheaded plays and matedor defense.

Correct.

That was on display last night.

Peeps seem to think I was insulting Wilson or something when in fact its a compliment to the entire team.

I agree with Marvin except on 1 point. You can only contain a Beast, Beasts are unstoppable.
