It sounds like overall fairly positive on both sides of the ball. Anyone seeing anything where serious improvements need to be made so far? Yes, taking in the fact it's only preseason.

I think just playing together more and getting more experience is what it looks like to me. They look like they are playing hard and atleast doing the fundamental things well.

I'm not sure about Mike Morris, DT out in coverage. He broke up a pass but couldn't breathe while lining up on the next play....

I am pretty impressed with our D so far. Did Geno play? Did Howell play most of the first half?

Some of this needs to be taken with a grain of salt, because the Chargers are not playing well at all and these are two teams with brand new coaching staffs.

With that being said:

  • The secondary, particularly K'Von Wallace, Tariq Woolen, Coby Bryant, and DJ James are absolutely FLYING.
  • Byron Murphy is playing like a goddamn bowling ball. Shades of Geno Atkins. He is 100% as-advertised.
  • Mafe's role is varied. They have him rushing and spying, and his athleticism in the spy game has given Easton Stick (who is dogshit, to be fair) fits.
  • Offense is operationally solid. OL is busting here and there, but run game has been okay between Kenny Mac and Holani.
  • Speaking of MacIntosh, his pure rushing has been pretty nice. He's seeing the game clearly and he's got smooth footwork.
  • Holani is a better blocker, and he looks like an NFL player (albeit an unspectacular one). Reminds me a lot of Roy Helu Jr. actually.
  • Sam Howell is better than his camp reports indicate, but his sacks are going to be a problem in the NFL when it comes to game action. He's who he was in DC.
  • Feels like they're going to be mainly a passing team. Quick hits, jet sweep motion, etc. Shenault looks good in the jet motion niche.
  • Return game looks very good. Shenault looks like the best KR on the roster for the new kickoffs system.

I think a lot will disagree when its not even the starting Oline in overall the sack's he's had weren't even on him, the Oline let 2 guys right on in lol. I think your just enjoying the role of devil's advocate to pick apart A LOT miniscule stuff.

I wouldn't call it "devil's advocate" and I'm not really talking about just his sacks. I'm talking moreso about him dropping his eyes when threatened. He's got the same gene as Russ in that regard - which is why he took nearly 70 sacks last year behind the same rate of pressure we allowed in 2023.

Preseason for fans of our persuasion is the time to look at the minutiae. The overall result doesn't matter as much.
