Penny isn't a very good running back though, Carson is a much better back than Penny is. Penny is the type of guy that you would have loved to have in the 6th round. He isn't outright horrible, but in many area's he is lacking as a player. Penny is a one-trick pony. We run him on counters, and misdirection plays to the outside, and there he can get some yards. Anything other then those specific plays and he seems to fall apart. He struggles pushing for extra yardage through the inside. He can't seem to make the first person miss, or break tackles when running in between the tackles. Not a lot of burst, and a lot of hesitation.ImTheScientist":11huiu45 said:Seymour":11huiu45 said:ImTheScientist":11huiu45 said:DomeHawk":11huiu45 said:I don't even get this thread, the lack of running production had NOTHING to do with who was running the ball.
Then how do you explain Penny vs the rest?
Penny and Carson were within .2 YPC of each other this year with Carson working more in the 1st half and wearing the D down.
1 carry for 28 yards from a hole a truck could drive through is as much luck of the play than ability of the runner. That said, Penny is the bigger break away threat, but no holes and Carson gets more yards.
Bottom line...."Penny vs the rest" is based on such a small sample size there is lose footing you are standing on.
Bottom line for me is if the script was flipped you would be posting about how bad Penny is. You did it early in the season. As the season progressed random excuses with zero evidence started to pop up. Early in the season YPC was everything to you. Once Penny passed up Carson it no longer mattered and you just pointed to limited sample size.
Makes me smile. Thanks.
Penny is THE quintessential third down back. He has some hands so he can catch, and he can burn you on misdirection plays. Those players are a dime a dozen though. There was a reason that he was behind Davis, and Carson on the depth chart. He only has one specific niche. You can't run counters, and misdirection plays on every snap. They have to be intelligently done.
Now, Carson on the other hand is our glass cannon bell cow. He can pretty much do everything, and this season he was among the best running backs in the NFL. The thing about him is on his runs he rarely lost yards, and he gained consistent yardage. Those types of running backs demoralize defenses. Even when the line was penetrated he could turn a loss into a 2-3 yard gain. He very much so was like our very own Marshawn Lynch of old.
I don't think Penny is ever going to take the next evolution. He's going to be a change up back that you don't really ever want to get the bulk of the carries. Think Reggie Bush in NO.
