i know next year is going to be crazy with the Cap and resigning key players but is their anyway they can resign Steven Hauschka becuase he's 100 percent on kicks that are not blocked this year and added distance to his game by hitting from 50 plus yards.
I think having a good kicker is important and wins games hope they can keep him.

You don't pay kickers, you get another.

Hopefully his lack of distance, although it's been a bit better this year, will hold his price down though and we can resign him.

Janikowski is making 3.8m a year and that handicaps teams a bit.

I do like him though, he's clutch and I do hope we resign him but not at the expense of other more important signings.

It's usually right after you let a good kicker go because of money, that you wind up kicking yourself for letting them go.

That said, you just can't pay a kicker that much money. Pay less and score more TDs.

Hauschka has been great...but there are two trains of thought on kickers

1. they are a dime a dozen (most teams)
2. if you have a great one keep him...(a few teams)

It is amazing how kickers are treated based on the ultimate control they have on the outcomes of games...I actually think if you have a great one keep him (if financially possible) because you know you have a finished product. I don't want some shank-a-saurus walking up with the game on the line...

I would love to keep him and I hope he doesn't get Josh Brown syndrome or we will go find another Olindo.

The top kickers in the NFL make 2-3 million, and I think Hauschka makes around 700k per year.

So I think Pete/John would be willing to give Hauschka a modest bump to maybe in the 1.2 million per year range........but if he wants to be included in that 2-3 million class of kickers? Nope, I think we tell Steve thanks for the memories, but hit the bricks. Cap space is going to be extra tight next year, so there's no way we use 2 million of it on a kicker, even one as good as Hauschka.

We have been extremely fortunate over the years in playing the field for Kickers. That being said Hauschka is a weapon! IIRC he is leading the NFL in points scored right now. Somehow I think you find a way to keep this guy. I could be wrong though!

Hey, that Rian Lindell is pretty solid. Oh no, wait, why did we let him go? All is lost!

Oh, Josh Brown. He's pretty good, I guess.

...

Ugh, I can't believe Josh Brown left in FA! What a tool! What are we gonna do now?

Oh, Olindo Mare? He sucks!

Oh, actually, he's been pretty good.

...

WTF?! Why didn't we match Carolina for Olindo Mare?! He's been so good here!

What? WTF is a "Hauschka"?!?! This is terrible!

Oh, hey, he's been pretty consistent for us, and his range is getting better.

...

And thus the cycle of life continues...

Franchise him again..

No.

1. We might need the franchise on a far more important player.
2. A top five salary for kickers would be like 2 million a year. Too much.

It is an option. I think you are correct about a more vital player needing the tag.. potentially Bennett or Avril are the only ones that come to mind.

Or Sherm, or ET, etc.

Clemons is no longer playing like a 6 million a year DE, so my guess is Pete/John are going to give that money slot to Bennett or Avril next year to try and secure either/both to a long term contract.

No matter how this shakes out, franchising your kicker is rarely a good idea, that tag is just too valuable to waste on a kicker.

Sherm is under contract for another year as is Earl. Okung has two more years.

KJ Wright still has another year under contract as well. It will be interesting to see who is made a priority to get done before contracts expire.

WT3 merits another deal here I think, although it may be cheaper to keep Browner around for 2-3 more years.

Better to get Sherm and Earl signed to long-term deals BEFORE their contracts end rather than overpay a kicker.

There is no kicker - not one - worth sacrificing the ability to keep your core superstars.

Most kickers hover around the 80-84% success rate on FGs, and there are a LOT of those kinds of guys out there. Sometimes, they go above that for a season, and sometimes they go below it. But that's how they tend to average out, even the guys who are thought of as "clutch".

I like Hauschka and I hope he stays, but if he wants a lucrative deal, we should let him seek it elsewhere and go get a replacement from the many who are available.

I am not advocating franchising Haushka, but it is an option to keep one of the best kickers in the league the past 3 years.

I think ET and Sherm are getting their $$$ this offseason because RW will get his after 2014. It will be interesting to see what happens.. guys like Mebane, Bryant, and Miller could be asked to take cuts in order to keep the whole crew together during their prime..

We can't keep everybody obviously.. especially if we win the SB..

I think there are like 14 free agent kickers next year, with the dilution of available kickers the price should not be that bad, I think Seattle is paying him around 750k or so. I think he will end up staying here for a million or so.

I would resign him, but not for a huge amount. As much as I like Steven and what he has done since he has been here in Seattle, we have to use as much money as possible to get Earl, Sherm and other core guys signed up long term when the time comes.

I feel like this might be a good reason to lock up Haushcka here. We've had too many good kickers in a row. It's only a matter of time until the next guy we bring in is a Billy Cundiff.
