Perhaps it’s counter-intuitive to think that the Seahawks should be especially concerned with any team’s third wide receiver. But, in truth, Seattle will need to be wary of new 49er Stevie Johnson.
The last time Johnson faced the Seahawks as a member of the Buffalo Bills in December of 2012, he had eight catches for 115 yards and a touchdown.
There are some important caveats that go along with this intimidating stat line.
For one, the Seahawks jumped out to a 14-0 advantage in the first ten minutes, and blew out the Bills in Buffalo, 50-17. 21 of Johnson’s receiving yards come in the fourth quarter, when the Seahawks were playing backups on defense — these are the yards that push Johnson’s pretty-good day above the 100-yard mark.
Also, the Seahawks managed to keep the rest of Buffalo’s passing game in check: between starter Ryan Fitzpatrick and backup Tyler Thigpen, the Bills went 24-for-43 for 247 yards on the day, including two interceptions.
Still: Johnson beat Richard Sherman for a 20-yard touchdown catch, and Johnson also beat Sherman way down the field on another pass that was just a bit overthrown. How did this happen?
To my eyes, it appears that Johnson beat Sherman using lateral quickness and explosiveness. Johnson doesn’t try to out-muscle or out-run Sherman. Rather, he used deceptive fakes to gain an important step over Sherman.
That was a Harbaugh to Harbaugh favor in the arms war we were having with the Niners. No way we were in the bidding for Boldin, IIRC we had just signed Harvin and Boldin was getting 6 mil a year.CodeWarrior":2zw4nwsa said:Love Boldin the player. Hate Boldin the niner. It did drive up the price for Harvin. I think they probably thought there was a chance they'd end up with him, but if they didn't, we'd get gouged on the price to Minn.HawkWow":d6zbhazs said:Lords of Scythia":d6zbhazs said:At the time, it felt like we struck a blow against the Niners (in the arms race) by getting Harvin (who was being vigorously targetted by SF)
Smoke and mirrors, bro. The 9ers pawned us and won two battles (and counting) with the pretense of wanting Harvin. Brilliant strategy that left both the Vikes and 9ers laughing their ass' off at our ineptitude / naiveté.
Classic bait and switch, executed to perfection.
