I was with the understanding that we retain colors and name and that history is split, did the NBA renige or Bennett on that issue.
Yeh... I think when we let him leave that the agreement was we kept the name, history, ect, in the event we got another team.
Nope. The deal was we get the name back if we got an expansion team within a certain time frame. Specifically stated expansion and not relocation. Expansion is never going to happen with the NBA right now. Contraction is more likely at this point. There was also this stupid thing in the deal the city made with Clay about shared history. Basically the city made a HORRIBLE deal, effectively selling away the team's name and history. Besides actually losing the team, it was the one part of the whole deal that I was most upset about at the time.
That doesn't mean we can't get it back. The way the clause of the MOU states it, Chris Hansen clearly is concerned with getting the name and history back. As well he should be. I've said it in the past that I have little to no interest in rooting for the Seattle Kings or Seattle Shockers. It's a big deal. Hansen is one of us. He knows that.
Getting the name back shouldn't be a problem. The NBA would be absolutely idiotic if they didn't force Clay Bennett to give it back. They have brand name and loyalty in this region. 40 years of it. Just look what has happened with Charlotte. They didn't have the Hornets for close to the history as we did with the Supes. But ask anyone over there. It's never been the same with the Bobcats. Not even close. And I don't see why Clay would even want it. The Thunder fans most certainly do not. They've built their own identity. Nor do they want to be reminded of us all the damn time.
The history on the other hand might end up being a trickier deal. The NBA has always has this bug up it's ass over wanting past team's history recognized in the city it's moved to. I'm pretty sure the Lakers have old Minneapolis Lakers banners hanging. At least we don't have that problem. But I could see a scenario where the league doesn't want whatever team moves here's history to be wiped away. Leaving us stuck with say the Kings history and record books, and our old one over in OKC. Have you noticed that during OKC's playoff games, the tv networks keep referencing SEATTLE SUPERSONICS playoff history as the last time they did whatever? Yeah, total and utter BULLSHIT. The NBA annoys the crap out of me with that. That said, there hasn't quite been a situation such as this before. One where a 40+ year team moved, the new city rebranded it entirely, and the old city got a team back and was able to use it's old name. So MAYBE, and hopefully, the league would be agreeable in allow us to uget our history and records back, and allow OKC's to start the year the began playing there under their new identity. And hopefully not just the silly "shared" history that was talked about when the team left.
