Blame the D b/c the Hawks got run on today, and had no answers.
There's a lot more blame to spread around than pinning it all on the defense.
The Titans had the ball for over 42 minutes, we had it for 22 and change, with most of that disparity coming in the 2nd half/OT when we made just two first downs. In the 4th quarter after the Swain TD gave us a two TD lead when we needed to run time off the clock, we effectively had three 3 and outs and no first downs. In overtime, Russell put us in a huge hole by forcing Dickson to punt from a short formation on a play where he should have been called for grounding and a game ending safety. Meyers missed an XP that had he made, would have forced the Titans to go for 2 on at least one of their 4th quarter TD's.
Metcalf is a head case and doesn't know how to block without getting called for holding. Russell can no longer escape a pass rush and refuses to change his style to account for his advancing age. Of his 31 passing attempts, all but 4 were targeted to 3 wide receivers. Two out of every three of Russell's passes were targeted to either Lockett or Metcalf. Our tight ends had just one catch for 3 yards. There were zero passes to Chris Carson. We were 4-12 on 3rd down conversions. Carson had just 13 carries in a game where we led for most of the way.
There's no doubt that the defense sucked, but they were not alone. The offense did nothing to keep them off the field in the 2nd half when fatigue starts setting in.
This right here. Football is a complementary TEAM sport.
And before, people post, yeah but "30 points" Seven of those were off busted coverage - that won't happen against good defenses (the Titans are not). And Seven points were off a turnover caused by the defense.
So the offense really only manufactured two good drives the entire game.. The rest were 3 and outs.
