CB Michael Jackson has been traded to Carolina for LB- Michael Barrett

www.Seahawks.com/team/transactions

AUGUST
08/22
Traded CB Michael Jackson to Carolina. Acquired LB Michael Barrett from Carolina.

This was player for player trade that should result in a cap savings as Jackson had a $3 mil + contract.

I think this trade is all about fit. Jackson is best on the perimeter in zone coverage. The DBs the Seahawks are keeping travel better and are stickier in man coverage. This trade is precipitated by a change in the style of defense for 2024. Don't know anything about the incoming linebacker yet. Presumably, he will be a better fit in the new Seattle defense. Likely a Smart Trade.

With regards to contracts, Seahawks trade a 1 year contract for a 4 year contract along with a 2024 cap savings of $136,575.*

* Note that Michael's 2024 contract was renegotiated downward from $3,116,000 to $1,222,500 earlier in the year per OTC.

Thanks for posting that my friend, was thinking Jackson’s contract had been renegotiated. So my earlier post was wrong. However even a small cap gain is not a bad thing.

Barrett was a solid college ILB though widely thought to not be athletic enough for the pros. Seems Mac likely wanted him, he would know what the player can actually do from his days at Michigan. Hope he’s a solid add at a position of relative numerical weakness. Our staff seems to be good at coaching up LBs as we have noticed with Rhattigan.

I agree with you though on the trade page that JS did MJ a solid by trading him to a team where he may be more scheme appropriate and may see more playing time. In the end players who come here will understand the team is fair to them.

Taylor gone to the Bears. Got a 6th rounder next year in return

In my eyes, this is another "fit" move. Darrell Taylor never quite expanded his role beyond that of a pass rush specialist.

John did right by Taylor in trading Darrell to a team in need of a rush specialist. Maybe he can expand his role in Chicago.

This move will increase available cap space by a little under $2.2M.

ROSTER CHURN (y)

Here is a useful article which will help many understand the intricacies and the timing surrounding the upcoming cuts:

These are the key dates:

These are the key deadlines to pay attention to
  • 4 pm ET on Tuesday, Aug. 27: Teams must trim roster to 53 players
  • Noon ET on Wednesday, Aug. 28: Deadline for claiming players who are subject to waivers.
  • After 12:01 pm ET on Aug. 28: 17-man practice squads may be formed (as long as one player is an international player).
  • After 4:01 pm ET on Aug. 28: Any player placed on Reserve/Injured, Reserve/Non-Football Injury or Illness, or Practice Squad; Injured during the regular season or postseason, may be designated for return later in the season, subject to the applicable procedures. New this year: A maximum of two players who are placed on an applicable Reserve List on the business day of the final roster reduction to be designated for return.

Two key players surrounding these cuts could be Nwosu (knee) and Burns (foot) who both got nicked up against Cleveland. This could affect a couple of position groups to the advantage of younger players. Please take care in posting as like the UDFAs there can be lots of rumours surrounding the PS formation. My partners here are usually always cautious and f -a - s - t , but everyone here is urged to aid in keeping this thread current To me it also seems likely that the team will have 17 players on the PS with our IPP player (Pircher) being the 17th guy.

Thanks Jville, much appreciated!!

Sadly that site is in error as Richardson was released in the 18th of August. Willie Roberts was expected.

There are still 52 moves to go.

The Hawks have agreed to a trade with Jax to acquire DE/OLB- Trevis Gipson, they are apparently trading a late round draft pick to acquire this player. Little detail is presently available. Here no is the official announcement on the team transaction page:
AUGUST
08/26Traded 2025 sixth-round draft pick to Jacksonville. Acquired LB Trevis Gipson from Jacksonville. Released CB Willie Roberts.

Here's another report on this transaction from the team site:

No real info on the trade compensation given to Max by the team other than draft pick compensation.

Here's a WIKI on Gipson:

Here also is a draft profile:

Seems like an interesting prospect.

When this trade becomes official the cuts and PS number goes back up to 53 pending To the completion of the PS on Thursday.

Regrettably this would seem to indicate Nwosu was hurt badly enough to miss some real time. I’m not listing Gipson on the roster yet until the trade becomes official.

The team has now announced the trade, so it's official.

It could be an indicator of Nwosu being out awhile or ot could just be they still don’t think our LB group is strong enough yet.

NFL network /Sirius/XM is sporting that Nwosu injured his MCL and will be out 2-6 weeks. Not great news.

Here's another report:

This acquisition is going to change at least a few of the cuts. Trader John sure stays busy.

This roster cut situation is markedly different than what I have experienced in the long period I have been recording the team's transactions and keeping the roster. Clearly with PC no longer here things move at the pace decided by JS. It seems more than passing unusual that essentially 2.5 hours from the cuts dead line we know with some certainty of just 1 player announced as being released. Perhaps it is intentional, perhaps there are things cooking in the background.
