I didn't mean to post that twice, I was trying to edit it to add the rest. It never lets me delete posts here, once a Mod said that you can't delete them when new posts have been made but nobody else posted.

Honestly, yesterday was the game that finally convinced me that having a human call balls and strikes makes no Goddamn sense. I've been pretty ambivalent about having automated strike zones up until now, because USUALLY umps do a reasonable enough job, and I like the fact that good defensive catchers can help their pitchers get borderline calls. Knowing an ump's strike zone also can add an interesting element of variability to a game which can feel redundant and repetitive.

That said, I had also never seen an umpire so wildly inconsistent and frankly incompetent as last night. I feel bad for him, because I'm sure he's going to hear it from his superiors as it was his debut, and I'm sure he's been wanting that opportunity for years. Still, in a game that was otherwise closely-contested, a series of AWFUL calls clearly swung the game to the A's. It was extreme enough to disrupt the game, to create incredible uncertainty about what would be called a ball or a strike, and IMO ruin the experience. No excuse for it in this day and age.

For the full extent of the umps tough night go to lookout landing.

How's does the Oakland grounds crew not put the tarp on the field? Stupid rain cancellations.

Not surprised a Bay Area's teams groundscrew screwed the pooch. That stadium is a dumpster fire.
As for Noesi being DFa'ed quickly, kudos at Lloyd and Jack for making that mistake go away.

They were too busy cleaning raw sewage out of the dugouts & locker rooms.

Nothing is more funny than people jumping on message boards (not on here, but elsewhere), calling in on the radio etc. telling people "it's still early" or "it's only 3 games" or "don't get ahead of yourself" blah blah blah.
Put on some damn big boy pants and and enjoy something for once! Geez.
Gotta' love what we are seeing so far, sure they are a young team and will have some slumps, but I was thinking 78 wins on the season, feeling real confident in that. In fact, wouldn't be surprised if they win 82-84 games.
82-84 wins would be real nice. It would mean they're relevant most the season which is good enough for me.

Straily was shutting us down but we finally got to him in the 5th. Seager doubled to start off the inning and Ackley hit a home run to make it 2-0. Almonte then hit a solo shot to make it 3-0, then Miller doubled and Cano got walked. Smoak is up with runners on 1st and 2nd.

The start of the 9th made me a bit uncomfortable but the M's end up winning 3-1. The King went 8.1 with 9 K's, 1 BB and 1 ER. Felix is 2-0 with 19 K's.

I like another move made by McClendon to start Felix in today's game and rather than start Young use him as long reliever in the bullpen.

It coincides with one of the starters returning and probably strengthens the pen.

they've guranteed themselves at least a 4-2 road trip, which I'm totally satisfied with, 5-1 is gravy.
On the surface Gray vs Erasmo looks like a bit of a mismatch.
Great start to the season!
