My goal is to get to the World Series eventually, not win 84 right away. If you honestly think our team is good enough right now to unload all the bullets in our gun, then you trade Franklin. I don't think we're there. Heck, I don't even think we're anywhere close. Our #1 biggest need is young offensive talent. Pick one out of Miller and Franklin and go? Go where? Franklin has as much potential as just about anybody we've got. Not the kind of guy a young team that has been bad for a decade has the luxury of trading for a subpar outfielder or #4 pitcher.
Our number one biggest need is definitely not young talent. We've had loads of that for the last 4-5 years.
At some point you have to use that talent on the field or in bringing in other players. Franklin and Miller both play the same position (sort of, Franklins not really a ss)
You're advocating wasting another of Cano and Felixs prime years sitting on prospects. This team can't do it. Not anymore. Move Franklin to the outfield or package him for what you do need
Dude, I'm sorry, I've got no beef with you, but I can't let this gem of a post just sit there.
Did you really just say we've had loads of young talent for the last 4-5 years. Besides MAYBE Seager, and MAYBE Zunino, name one more. Name one more guy that would start on any other lineup in the AL West, or just about any other team out there. Name one. Loads of young talent?
Pick any team that had a good era recently. Now name any of them that did it without young players that turned into all-stars. Don't worry, I'll wait.
I'm advocating doing whatever the F is necessary to surround Cano and Felix with a good core of players. And you aren't going to do that with middling free agents, and you definitely aren't going to do that by trading one of your best prospects for a middling outfielder or middle reliever. That is how you STAY bad.
There is one way to be a prolonged winning team in baseball, and only one way. That is to build a cheap, young, good core. Which we have not come anywhere close to doing. We will not win, will not be a playoff team, will not contend, until we have some good young talent. Talent that is so good, and so young, that they are oblivious to the failure that surrounds this franchise, this lineup, and this "loads of young talent" we have had for the last 4-5 years.
Let's trade all of the prospects that aren't in the majors right now for mediocre outfielders and relief pitchers. Do that, and we can guarantee that we will be bad for another 13 years.
We went with prospects and we missed on just about all of them. We missed bad. There is nothing left to do but start over and try to do it again. Corey Hart? Logan Morrison? We just paid a buttload for a freaking closer for a bad team. We just wasted a bunch of money on guys who will prevent young players from getting more shots. We need to keep running more and more young players up there until we eventually find some that stick.
Who had the best eras you can think of in the last 25 years? The Yanks, Rangers, Mariners, Red Sox, Braves, Giants, Rays, Indians, whoever else you want to name. They all did it one way. They all built a young core, and then added a few pieces to it when it became good enough to contend. If you don't do it that way, you become expensive and old, and only delay the process. If we have ANY young players with any talent whatsoever, like a Nick Franklin, the absolute worst thing you can do is trade that for a player that won't be here by the time you get good enough to contend.
In a couple of years, if we hit on these young pitchers and the rotation can absolutely carry us, sure, try to get mediocre on offense if you have to, but we are so dang far away from that level, all we would be doing is lessening our chance for eventual success.
