Jack Z gets a multi year extension. Not sure how I feel, would rather have waited until the end of the season to see if we make the play offs first. He can thank Lloyd McClendon for this.

I hope he does...He deserves credit for the team playing well. He made the trades, he helped shore up the minor league teams, etc. Why should he get blamed when things go wrong and not get any credit when they win. Jack Z has done a pretty good job. He hired McClendon after all...that speaks volumes.

I agree, my biggest criticism would be that he rushes some of our prospects when they could have benefited from staying longer in the minors i.e Miller, Franklin, Taylor, Zunino, and James Jones. Seager and Ackley have been successes though. Montero not panning out is on Montero.

It's damned if you do and damned if you don't. Smoak isn't working out but he was a top goy in the Rangers farm system and they had good hitters at the time. Taylor is doing well. Miller had a hot start, James Jones is getting time now in the minors so it's soon to judge him. Franklin was one of the best players last year, they traded him for Austin Jackson which is a win. Hey, the pitching staff is solid and most of those guys are Jack Z guys. The strength of this team is because of its pitching.

The Mariners have rediscovered that offense wins games after taking last night off. They lead 5-0 heading to the 5th.

We have to win these games because most of September is head to head with the Angels and A's.

Looks like we will gain a game back on the A's tonight. 5-0 in the bottom of the 8th. Paxton went 6 2/3.

I think the biggest issue I've had with the treatment of the "prospects" over the last few years wasnt their integration into the line up. I think we all wanted to see Smoak, Ackley, Montero, etc. with the big club. Its that there was no veteran support or top notch talent (offensively) around them. If (when) Smoak and co. struggled to hit .225 or reach any consistency it was a highlight of the team's failures, as noone else was around to pick up the slack.

This year we've seen more consistency from some (Ackley especially), rid of others (Smoak, Montero) and the emergence of Seager. There real major league hitters around them now as well (most notably Cano) that take some of the attention away from the younger (ish) guys.

Either way, its a far better balance than we've seen in the past, and we are being rewarded with a playoff contending team heading into September.

Great start from Paxton last night.

Uh, I would categorize it as an effectively wild start, not great.

Well, looks like McClendon decided to mail in today's game by starting Erasmo Ramirez. Already down 4-0 in the bottom of the 2nd.

Zunino gets a run back with a HR in the bottom of the 2nd and Erasmo decides to give up a grand slam and it is now 8-1 in the top of the 3rd.

I say leave him out there and let him die.The Rangers are all swinging for the fences now.

Disaster of a game. I know we saved Felix for the Nationals but we need to win these types of games as well.

I hate the idea of throwing games away but in baseball there are so many games, you might just have to set yourself up for the stretch run. Felix pitches in HUGE games the rest of the way. He goes against the Nationals, then he pitches in every series against a division opponent the rest of the way. He's also scheduled to pitch the last game of the season it looks like. The M's will probably need to get to at least 90 wins to make the playoffs. I don't see Detroit going away.

Walker. Oh wait......................nm

Walker would have at least avoided throwing fastballs with no movement right down the middle of the plate. Erasmo was either throwing batting practice or way outside.

It wasn't too much a disaster now as Detroit lost but frustrating as we could do with putting some space between them.

A disaster is losing four games to the Phillies and Rangers. That is the difference between being 76-56 and only three games back of first place, or where the Mariners sit now at 72-60 and 7 games back of first.

The games that McClendon is throwing away are not meaningless.

Ramirez was pitching extremely, extremely well in AAA, whereas Walker has not been. I understand why they chose Erasmo, but he's starting to look more and more like a AAAA pitcher with each start. At least Paxton looked fairly good in his last start.

It's kind of incredible that the M's are going to be relevant going into September. With the # of games against the Angels and The As left, it's going to be a hell of a lot of fun.
