So, make a prediction of his 2023 salary and we'll see who comes closer.

My guess is $3.0M.

I'm guessing my "disappointed" salary is north of $4M, right?
Guessing 3M base with 1.5 in incentives with .5 being NLTBE.

He played passably well when he was healthy.

He will have to prove that he can stay healthy this season to get his 5 year deal.

Depth. Definitely a sign that RG is a target moving forward.

Thank you for spelling it "re-sign" instead of "resign". You must have passed 7th grade English. Good job.

Looks like Gabe Jackson is gone. Thank god.

It's a slight overpay for Haynes, BUT:

1. Consider that even bang average players at the spot are getting larger contracts these days.
2. You'd probably rather -slightly- overpay for a guy you know can play than risk going into the draft and being backed into reaching on a guard, or risk going with a bargain bin FA.

Can't go into the draft with a fully bare cupboard at any given spot. That's how Colliers happen.

Fair enough. I'll take North of $4M then. The Seahawks gave Blythe $4M and he did nothing the previous year.

I like the player and I'm glad he's back. But the key question is always about value.

The team has a history of overpaying in instances like this. I'd bet that his contract is quite a bit higher than most are thinking; my money is on the $5M-$6M range.

What this move does allow is for us to cut Gabe Jackson. Per OTC, cutting Gabe would save us $6.5M, but would also result in $4.8M of dead money (all in 2023). So, even signing Haynes at an above-market price around $5M-$6M will probably save the team a bit of cap space if i) he can start, ii) RG can be backed up by someone on rookie contract, and iii) we can cut Jackson.

With this signing, we are set on both tackles and guards, now we need a center. Our running game won't really take off until we have a better run blocking center.

My bold prediction is we move up into the top half of the 3rd round (#70 - 75 overall) to draft our Center of the future. Or perhaps we don't need to trade up because we acquired a pick in that range by trading down in the 1st round. Regardless, we will draft our Center of the future on Day 2.

Draft a center that's ready to start, and perhaps draft/sign depth to the interior linemen, we are set on OL. All we have to do would be to pray that our tackles keep improving with experience. We shall have an OL with guys we drafted.

If we want one of the top-tier centers we may have to use a second round pick. PFF has Steve Avila, Luke Wypler, John Michael Schmitz, and Joe Tippmann all going in the second round. After those 4 there's a significant drop-off.

If a top center prospect is there at a good value then that would be nice and all, but we really aren't going to reach for one and shouldn't. Remember when Damien Lewis needed to spot start at center with no experience and ended up playing great?

I don't know where it comes from exactly, but there's a persistent group of Hawks fans on the internet that think having a star center is a key component to building a good team. I like Tobeck and Unger as much as most, but let's not pretend like they were the reason we went to those Super Bowls. We've had a total of what, three seasons in which our center has been voted to the Pro Bowl? Is that why people are clamoring for a top center? Maybe it's still fallout from when the Drew Nowak/Patrick Lewis competition ended in a trainwreck? Yes, Dee Eskridge has been fragile and hasn't produced much of anything for us. No, that doesn't mean we really needed a center when we still had Ethan Pocic who we had just taken in the second round a couple of years before.

Center in an outside zone stretch blocking scheme is mainly about communication, calling the correct protections, and then being agile enough to get to the second level to block a LB or on most plays just sitting around double-teaming a block with a guard. Olusegun Oluwatimi is the 110th consensus prospect as of today and he'd probably do a great job. Very smart football IQ guy with a ton of experience and good quickness. Juice Scruggs played well enough that at the Shrine game that he could be a mid day 3 pick with a decent combine and he fits the bill for a zone blocking center.

Every time Haynes has played against Donald he has done a creditable job controlling Donald, so despite his significant injury history Haynes is considered a desirable keeeper maybe he cann stay healthy going forward.

For insurance though I’d draft a couple of potential replacements.

I believe it is an echo of the Kevin Mawae situation. When he left us to go to the Jets, they had their best record in their history and went to the AFC Championship. When he left the Jets and went to the Titans, they doubled their win total and went to the playoffs the next two seasons. I may be wrong that that is the origin of the fan's center angst, but that looks like a really good final piece to a playoff puzzle.

I don't think it is critical in the least. I was one of the few that liked Pocic. It was the Me3 marks who blamed him for Wilson's shortcomings. The problem is that Wilson could have had Mawae playing in front of him, and he would still have the same shortcomings. I believe we need to upgrade Blythe. He is decent, and I want a good center. There are at least five in the draft that would be a clear upgrade physically. The question is whether they will be NFL ready for the complexities of the position.

Looks like we should call this a draw.

According to overthecap.com, Haynes cap number is $3.49M with a per game roster bonus of $510,000, which allows him to earn exactly $4.0M if he plays in all 17 games.
