Will the Seahawks carry 6 WRs?

What is the rule on IR? What prevents a team from stashing guys like Harper on IR as a redshirt year in a sense if they don't think they'll clear waivers and make it to the PS?

Which ones are the best special teams players?

It is going to be absolutely nuts this year. You can't keep 6 WR's and 5 RB's and 4 Guards (9 lineman?). How many of the DT's and DE's are we going to keep? I have Scruggs down as the 9th D-lineman. How about corners? We haven't even seen Simon yet. And Blackmon is supposedly playing well, and Maxwell is supposedly improved.

The practice squad is going to get raided, and there are going to be some hissy fits going on all over the place on this site.

To be honest, I think WR might be just about the least of my worries. I don't see a huge difference between the last guy on and a guy you can grab elsewhere later. Besides that, we're not gonna throw it enough to where a #6 WR is going to get more than a handful of catches at most.

Watch out for Walters. I've heard Carroll single him out a few times. With a good preseason he might go Charly Martin on us and find a way onto the roster.

Pretty sure he's out for the year.

My guess is that Seattle keeps 6. The odds of losing 1 WR by November is fairly high, and even if everyone stays healthy they could at least delay their decision over Williams / Harper. They won't get the extra roster spot they need for other positions though. It's going to be a tough decision, unless both Harper and Williams look amazing this month.

Generally speaking, the player needs to have a significant injury to land on IR. If a team IR's a player with a minor injury, they then have to report it as a "minor injury" IR and when that player is fully healthy, by rule he must be released.

Rice, Tate, Baldwin, Kearse. Harper won't make it through to the practice squad, so he's in. Then, it all comes down to whether or not Williams shows his worthiness during the preseason. I would say it's probably still up in the air depending on how Williams plays. I guess Harper could play himself out of a spot, but he'd have to be really bad, right?

I think this is it. I really like Williams potential but he's more likely competing against a CB, RB, and LB for a roster spot. Harper was a 4th rd pick and if he improves and Harvin comes back healthy, losing Tate in FA would be much less painful.

Flanker/Z (#1)- Rice with Williams a possible replacement
Split End/X (#2)- Tate with Harper and his potential replacement
Slot/Y (#3)- Harvin with Baldwin as his replacement

Kearse is kinda a guy who will be ok at any spot similar to Obo with a hair more athletic ability and size. Baldwin could probably play Split End but might not be strong enough to run block at that expected level.

Unless the look at Christine Micheal and say hey he has great hands and can swing to a slot position and perform a dual role for us allowing us to keep Ware and have 5 receivers.

With our less than stellar TE position, I can't see how in the world they wouldn't carry an extra WR to make up for it. I don't think WR competes as much with RB as it does with TE, and as that's an area of some need, it's an area that needs to be adjusted for with an extra player of a similar skill set.

I'd have to agree with you and with Kearly there as well. Given the dearth of available talent at TE on the open market ... and the fact that it sounds like Stephen Williams has been turning some heads, I'd have to say that they're probably leaning towards keeping 6 WR's. At 6'5", Stephen Williams would be almost like having a small TE out there ... AND you know that his combination of speed and tools are very intriguing to the organization. Yeah, I'd say that if Williams and Kearse continue to show well in the preseason games ... they've probably both forced their way on to the roster as well.

6 WR's would mean (of course) that the coaching staff would have to pare down somewhere else. Last year, the Hawks had 6 WR's on the final cut down to 53. After the dust settled in 2012, they had:

6 WR's (Rice, Tate, Baldwin, Charly Martin, Edwards, and Obomanu)
3 TE's (Miller, McCoy, McGrath)
5 RB's (Lynch, Turbin, Washington, Robinson, and Lumpkin)
2 QB's (Wilson and Flynn)
9 OL's (Okung, McQuistan, Unger, Moffitt, Giacomini, Sweezy, Jeanpierre, Carpenter, and Omiyale)

9 DL's (Clemons, Mebane, Branch, Bryant, Irvin, Jason Jones, Quinton McDonald, Howard, and Scruggs)
6 LB's (Leroy Hill, Wright, Wagner, Morgan, Farwell, and Malcolm Smith)
5 S's (Earl Thomas, Chancellor, Jeron Johnson, Maragos, and Winston Guy)
5 CB's (Browner, Sherman, Trufant, Byron Maxwell, and Jeremy Lane)

I dunno ... with a McQuistan on the roster who can play both Tackle and Guard, maybe (maybe) you can argue the Hawks can do without a guy like Frank Omiyale. Outside of that something like that though, I think things could get kind of thin if there are cuts elsewhere. There just isn't a whole lot of wiggle room on this roster IMO.

This thread got me thinking about Harpers size. He's listed at 6'1' 235. Anyone know how his blocking and special teams skills are? Just thinking out loud here but if he put on a bit more weight maybe Bevell could use him as a pass catching hybrid TE/WR. With his size he could possibly be a speed bump for blocking, and as long as the ball was delivered fairly quickly to him, it could be a wrinkle in the offensive sets at TE/WR. Not likely plausible, but fun to think about...

Go Hawks!

No Thurmond?

If Memory serves, Thurmond was on PUP until November.

Keep 6 wide receivers and cut one of the safety's.

Then if you need to we can slide browner over to play safety in a pinch.

Pure genius I am.

Got it, I thought you were listing your expectations for 2013. Trufant should have made that obvious.

Yes, that's correct. The list that I had above is based upon Eric Williams's list from the Hawks final cutdown on August 31st of last year ...

Now, things changed pretty rapidly after the cutdown (obviously) as the Hawks cut Kellen Winslow the very next day on September 1st ... signing Evan Moore [he was cut on December 18th when Sean McGrath was promoted from the practice squad] ... and then released Charly Martin on November 7th [I believe that move might have been made in order to activate Thurmond from the PUP actually. Not totally sure about that one though].

At any rate, the Hawks DID have 6 WR's when they cut down to 53 last year. I don't know if that means didly in terms of this year ... but there you go.
