Ok, your prerogative of course. But I think any one of Jenkins, Daniels, Zeitler or Becton would have been a huge upgrade over any one of our guards based on how they performed last season and how ours performed last season. Is that an exaggeration?
Take a look at any one of those guys contracts that were given out. I don't believe any one of them were overpaid in the current market and to me even reasonable. Is that an exaggeration?
It's not just $$...it's the probability the player improves the OL play to the level needed to be ~top 10-15.
Zeitler matches our standard pattern of signing older OL heading into the down side of their careers. Daniels is coming off an acheles injury. I'm not negative on either of those 2, but neither are sure-thing major improvements over Laken Tomlinson's performance last year, which wasn't great but still our best G.
I was inititially interested in Becton and spent some time checking out his performance (reviewed loads of comments and watched his tape). He's the highest performance risk of those mentioned and I'm glad we didn't sign him.
IMO, we needed to target high-quality FA for the position or risk ending up in our same OL pattern. Fries and Jenkins were the 2 realistic opportunities with a high probability to improve our IOL play. JS was in on both...lost a bidding war on Fries that ended up as an overpay and Jenkins appears to be a regional decision. JS didn't cheap out on the position in his efforts, which has been his knock. I'm glad he didn't overpay for Fries and not sure he had a realistic chance for Jenkins.
As I said before, the market for high quality IOL FA was limited this year. Fortunately, the draft appears to be stacked and we have 5 picks in the top 100. If JS shats the bed in the draft and the OL is still bottom 3rd, he's probably gone and rightfully so. Barring a major blunder, JS is a seahawk for this coming year and want him to succeed just like any player on our roster. What's the alternative...rooting for him to fail? That seems counter-intuitive, emotionally based. I get it...some folks spend their lives in a narrow focused mindset. It just doesn't work for me.
