Tough player to figure out for me. You certainly seem him flying around on the field from time to time but the stat line is less then desirable. I know stats aren't everything, he's getting double, he plays the run real well, he's new to the system BUT are you paying this man 20 million a year going foward?

I know what you are saying. I love players who do the dirty work and play the run like he does.He has the ability to make huge plays and change the game. I dont know if he is worth 20 mil though. Its a tough decision.
I wish Ansah,Reed and Clowney would have been healthy and active a full year together. Now the only way to know how good they can be together is take a leap of faith and pay them.
My problem is we have Wagner,Wright,Kendriks,Ford, Reed,Ansah, and Clowney and we still struggle to play mediocre D. It hasnt even been a bend but dont break D. They have struggled in the RZ. These guys can all play good football and any given game they can make plays. But the parts and the price are greater than the sum IMO.
I have been positive this D will turn it around when everyone is on the field but it didnt happen.I still think they can but it has to happen soon. I see Diggs come flying into the screen and its like he is playing at a whole different speed. I can see paying them but part of me hopes they blow up the front 7 or part of it and bring in young and hungry players that play fast with some sense of urgency and fire.

Clowney is a fantastic, uniquely talented player. He absolutely has that desirable ability to make jaw-dropping and inspiring game-changing plays. He also commands enough attention that he creates opportunities for the other 10 defenders.
Especially so when healthy and motivated.
I watched him in LA from my seat when he was both on the field and on the sidelines. The way he moved, and elected not to move, made it clear to me the guy is dealing with a legit debilitating and likely painful injury this year.
So he has shown toughness and a willingness to play hurt for his team.
The problem is we are talking about a HUGE payday for a guy that has had microfracture surgery and a couple arthroscopic surgeries on the knees in addition to a history of sports hernias.
I think (and hope) we let him test the market and give us an opportunity assess his League-value.
I would recommend enjoying what we have while we have it-don't believe this is a guy we overpay for with a hungry Collier waiting in the wings. lol

IMO the problem lies w the D line coaching and possibly even the D coordinator.

Very few DL players are worth 20+ million, but Clowney is one of them, and he's worth it for the same reason Wilson was worth 35 mil: he elevates players around him. Having Clowney is like having a QB plus multiple other good players who, without him, would be JAGs. You DO pay 35 mil for that.
The big thing is he's also proven. I'd say the top 3 reasons the defense has struggled are:
1. Underwhelming play by our LB's who were supposed to be the best in the league before the season.
2. Ansah being invisible for 98% of the season.

I am beginning to think that we should let him walk after this year. I do not think we should make an expensive extension based on desperation. Remember the Sheldon Richardson trade? That was an expensive move because we were desperate. Clowney is a huge talent. He single-handedly be a game changer. He was definitely worth the price we paid for him. But I do not think he is worth 20 + million a year, given his injury history. I would let someone else pay that and get the 3rd round Comp pick. I see Jaran Reed as being more of a priority for a big extension. He's younger, and does not have a major injury history. Inside D-line players of his talent are harder to find. Reed coupled with Poona really holds down the center of the line. I think Rasheem Green keeps getting better as a DE. We have 2 more years of Green on a rookie contract. If he keeps getting better, perhaps he will be the dynamic edge DE we need and will extend. We need to draft better for both lines. I would even buck our draft philosophy and move up to get an immediate talent at DE. We don't have to draft down next year for a zillion draft picks. We have a good number of picks, plus we can get some decent comp picks. D-line talent that is impactful right away almost always comes in the first round. We need to do better here. Let's emphasize youth and develop our own stars. We also need to think of drafting our LT of the future on the offensive line. I do not think it is Fant , nor Jarmarco Jones.

I don't know the severity of Clowney's injury. But core muscle injury, even slight, can be seriously debilitating. I'm sort of amazed he can even muster a desire to play while dealing with something like that. Not sure playing is the smart thing for him to do. The off season may not be long enough to provide for full recovery. But I am totally convinced if healthy he is worth the money to keep him on board. Guys like Clowney just don't come along that often. I liked Frank, but Clark is no Clowney.
