It is still the first half of May. Lot of time for regression to the mean, if that is what will happen. I'm just enjoying the ride so far.

I do like that they seem to be better than last year at the little things, moving runners, hitting RISP (still inconsistent, though), and pitching. Sadly, it's starting to look like Felix might be past his prime, which is sad because of all he has done for the franchise. Defense has been somewhat better, too. Marte has been quite the pleasant surprise O and D.

They have been terrible hitting with RISP. Sixth worst in baseball. .226.

Their batting average with runners in scoring position drops even further with 2 outs, down to just .206.

And yet somehow, the Mariners lead the majors in runs scored with two outs.

If they keep playing like they have they could get some real separation by the end the month. On the road at Baltimore next week will be a good test but after that it's Reds, A's, Twins, and Padres. That's a pretty soft schedule.

I remain hopeful for Felix. Perhaps he will never attain the heights he did just two years ago, when he should have won the Cy Young, but he has the talent and the wits to remain effective in his 30s like other previous greats. I would love for him to still be with this team when they finally, someday, maybe this year(??? PLEASE ???) make the playoffs.

After 34 games, the Mariners had 21-13 record two other times. They both finished those season with 90+ wins. They are also only 4 games behind in pacing the 116 win team - 2001 Mariners. But with all that said, we're still in May. Hopefully they will continue playing well through October.

Assuming they keep this up, I wonder what moves they will make at the trade deadline. Outfielder would make sense. I expect the pen to regress, so maybe another reliever. But they will get Furbush and Benoit back. As strong as our starting pitching has been, I'm not sure how well it sets up in a playoff series. Adding another dominant SP to go along with Felix would be huge.

It would be nice for a change to be a buyer come the trade deadline rather than a seller. :)

I think we have a ways to go, and if we're still in contention by then (and I sure hope we are) we'll know more about the team then. Another thing is injuries (knock wood). You never know where we might get hit by that.

Very good points. Tim Lincecum is available. Imagine a top of the rotation consisting of Felix, Lincecum, and Iwakuma.

Pump the brakes on timmay a bit. The Mariners have been watching him, but this guy has shit the bed the last few years.

Really ugly loss tonight. Had a 6-3 lead going into the top of the 8th but Peralta and Cishek each gave up 2 runs to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Of course, if the Ms score more instead of leaving 12 men on base including leaving the bases loaded twice...............

Cishek is gonna blow saves now and then, but I'd really prefer him to not blow it on a night when Seattle is 1-13 with RISP and still somehow clinging to a 1 run lead. It was probably the most painful 8 innings of the season heading into his disastrous 9th. The game winning hit was the epitome of how the whole game had gone, really.

I really hope at some point this year the Mariners can stop being so freaking awful with RISP. They are pretty bad at getting runners in from third too.

The Rangers are currently #1 in baseball (by a mile) for batting average with RISP. Seattle is bottom five and dropping. RISP is mostly a luck stat, so it's a little extra annoying that Seattle can't put Texas in the rear view mirror despite all the winning.

The pit
Cishek is frustrating to watch as the guy rarely has a 1,2,3 inning.
He usually misses by a foot or it's a meatball down the middle, no in between and the hitters rarely chase a ball on him because he misses off the plate so badly. He's gotten away with it mostly so far, but I expect many more results like last night.

Hopefully I'm wrong.

Cishek has looked real shaky the past few outings. He was due for some regression, but I hope he doesn't turn into Fernando Rodney 2.0.

And no, we don't want Tim Lincecum. He has been awful for well over a few years now. There is a reason why he is a FA. But assuming we are in contention, I'd like to see us add another dominant arm. Our rotation seems suited better for a long 162 game season than a short playoff series. While we are really good 1-5, after Felix, I don't think we exactly have a dominant #2. Walker has shown flashes, but not sure I'd want him as our #2 in a playoff series.

Right now, I agree with you about Walker but he continues to show signs of steady improvement so maybe if the made the playoffs after this season he'd be a worthy #2......hopefully.

Kearly: I get what you're saying about luck and hitting with RISP but I disagree, partiality. Getting hits involves a fair amount of luck but sac flies seem to be sorely lacking with this team and that's basic baseball to me.

Hernia: Agree with everything you and HawkLock's said about Cishek. He's not into Rodney in 2015 territory yet, but.....

Is it just me, or does Iwakuma really suck? He's been horrible so far this season, but then again, I've never been a big Kuma fan. Can he be optioned down, or is he out of options? JP needs to be called up. And I'd like to see more Montgomery. Servais doesn't go to him enough.

Aaaaaaand after a great comeback to go from down 6-3 to up 7-6 Fernando Cishek blows the save yet again.....after giving up a walk and a single he serves up three run dinger to Pujols. PLEASE DiPoto, get this team a REAL closer!

That was a fun game, just a pity about the 9th inning. Bullpen depth is catching up to us now with Peralta and Sischeck having 2 tough games. We were due some losses at some point and a lot of people were writing off/overlooking the Angels due to their own injuries.
