Ray Willis.

I thought the guy had lots of raw talent as a run blocking right tackle and with a nickname like big die slow how can you lose? If he had Breno's work ethic he would have been a pro bowler.

Lojack is a good one. Another one of Ruskell's under performing big school 4 year starting golden boys with a high floor and a low ceiling.

If only Jennings was male. Flawless technique, no wasted motion, always in a position to defend the pass have a ringside seat to watch the completion.

The last preseason he was on the team....I don't remember the opponent but they were picking on him and completing pass after pass. It was painful to watch. He was traded shortly after that for a bag of peanuts and a bud tall boy.

KJ Wright

How does a 4th Rd pick coming into his third year and already a starter fail expectations?

What were you expecting?

I vote Curry. You remember him. That 1st round can't miss player who got shown up by 4th Rounder named KJ Wright.

Regarding Curry, he never should have been drafted with the 4th overall pick. That's like...taking a punter in the 3rd round (which Jacksonville did last year). In both cases the GMs were loudly proclaiming their intention to get themselves fired from their jobs. So my expectation was it was impossible for him to live up to his draft status. He was marked man from the moment his name was called.

But then, finding out he had zero football IQ and played like a zombie. Good lord. How was that guy a sure thing again?

The Kipmiester proclaimed it. Remember, Ruskell made all his picks by Mel's reports. Thank god John doesnt do that.

Didnt he bust his head open during a tunnel run with his own helmet?
That was an awesome way to pump up the fans. He was hit and miss, great game to sucky game.

Koren Robinson.

The guy flashed greatness as a receiver in college. I believe he came into the NFL young, was either a jr or soph?

He and Jackson seemed like they always got open and sometimes when he got the ball he could just split the defense and run for days.

He had a few maturity issues but man, he seemed like he was going to turn into Randy Moss lite.

Damnit.

Also, there was a DT out of a small school that I thought was going to be a great player when I watched him. I forgot his name (Lamar King?) but I remember the hype. He was a DT that could dunk a basketball one handed! Not sure how that helped him bull through the OL and pressure the QB or blow up the run but at the time I was a kid and it seemed awesome.

I don't know if he busted, he just seemed rather ordinary for the premium we put on the guy.

We also had a CB Ken Lucas that I was pretty high on but I think we traded him to Carolina? And then of course I think we got hit with a rash of injuries to our DBs in our SB run that ended up killing us in the SB. Not sure if that counts as not working out, but I thought he was going to be a bigger piece of our success than he was.

Owen Schmitt. I thought he was going to be a bad ass. He just smelled like ass.
LoJack. IDK if there was some personality issue or what, but he seemed like a sour dude.

Both already mentioned here. I truly expected each of these guys to elevate the team to the next level. Just didn't happen. Brian Bosworth & Rick Mirer

when huard was promoted to starter because of injury, holmgren should have changed the offense to a run-oriented one. instead, they kept running the same pass-oriented offense, and huard was knocked.

basically, huard couldn't take much punishment, and might have succeeded if he'd been better-protected. it could be that he was sort of hung out to dry by circumstances as they were.

when huard was made starter, i was like, 'ok, just run the ball a lot, and let huard complete a few passes here and there... do whatever it takes to protect huard, because he's not quite up to nfl speed'

indeed, rumor was that; out of all the qbs on the team huard was throwing the best looking passes in practice.

anyway, huard is like one of those guys where you might wonder if he ever got the 'correct' shot at the nfl.

Mike Holmgren.

Took a team on the cusp, completely dismantled it, then took 6 years to get us to the Super Bowl. I expected a lot more from him.

As far as players go, Justin Forsett. I really thought that guy could be a great one, but he was only good.

I loved Justin. But Justin was just too small. Yes, being to small in the NFL will effect you. Not just in height, but in overall body mass. He was a quick twitch runner. But in today's NFL, the bigger guys are just too fast anymore.

But I did love him. I was so mad when he got waived and picked up by Indy his rookie year, but was ecstatic when they cut him and we got him back.

Brock Huard counts. To this day the best practice balls ever thrown belong to him, I'm sure. He was right up there with Jeff George in terms of god-given talent.

Also up there with George with immobility.

Doesn't Mirer have to be #1 on most people's list of failures? Dude was chosen #2, and he was a QB..........which IMO rates as a higher failure than players like Curry.

Michael Boulware.

I thought he was a playmaker and was going to be a success story converting from LB to safety. His Dolphins interception for the win gave me hope of the type of dynamic hitter/pass defender he would become. His abuse by Martz in the '04 playoff game exploited his natural aggressiveness that made him susceptible to fakes. Really like him as a person from the interviews he gave.

This is what makes the premise of the thread such a good one, as we're talking about individual perceptions.

I see Forsett as a classic underdog success story. 7th round pick/camp fodder on the fringes, cut, bounced around a bit, worked his way on to a 53 man roster, and has been in the league for 5 years and counting, well past the average career length for an NFL tailback. To me he's a hero, a class act who demonstrates how to make the most of the cards you've been dealt.
