This is literally the defining game.
Beating the Chargers (even at home), would show this is a team that can do more than just beat up on the teams that are weaker - but can also beat teams like the kind they would meet in the playoffs.
I don't know that many people really thought they were going to lose the Lion game, at least at the start of the year. But the Chargers are the kind of team we struggle with and the Chargers are pretty good right now.
The Lions are not a good team. We have beaten a number of bad teams so far. No real victories over anyone that is any good at all.
The Chargers would be a big step in showing this is not a pretty good team that beats up on bad teams, but a team that can compete with the good ones. The only bigger win that I can imagine for us would be to beat the Rams.
Beating the Chargers would also give us a shot at a wildcard because we still have 49er and Cards games on the schedule we should easily turn into wins.
