... about the offensive line: ‘I get it.’

A pretty sane article and take on our situation. I took note of several things in the article.

I didn't realize that Fries went 88MM over 5 years on his deal. I wouldn't have matched that deal either.

This quote rings true: “So, what does that mean? Do we just go ahead and start panicking and paying other guys who aren’t quite as good?”

Like this part: “We usually don’t jump in (to free agency that begins each March) that quick. We’ve made some decisions in the past that weren’t the best for the organization, because we weren’t patient. And you for that, because we want to be a team that is acquiring all throughout the year.”

And this too: “We need to be able to fix your team,” Schneider said. “And you have to have discipline in your spending. “I get it. We all want it. We all want things right now."

I've actually posted a couple times in frustration saying JS should be let go. This article gave me a little bit more of a perspective. They truly think that with the new coaching regime on offense that wasn't fire-saled together last season will make a difference, and I find it tough to argue with that. They also think that they have some developing players that needed both a little bit more time and some new coaching to come along.

Just changed my attitude on a few things. Not feeling as 'rudderless' about the situation now as I have in the past. He's right, you have to plan for the whole season, not just a FA splash. In particular when the biggest 'fish that got away' didn't even want to come for a physical, even given the busted leg.

Hasn't flipped me into 'magical unicorn rainbow farts' land - just a bit of perspective.

I know this is not the point of your post but regarding Fries, it wasn't so much the contract as it was being able to check out his health. That contract has an out after 2 seasons. So essentially you're looking at the guaranteed money - $34M.

EDIT** 2 yrs / $44M. I wasn't trying to be disingenuous, just looked at the wrong column on the contract details.

There's three young interior linemen that could still be salvaged with league-average coaching, and from what I've read, at least one of them fit Kubiak's system pretty well. That and the draft can still go a long ways.

Well are we striving for a good offensive line next season or a better one than last season? Because better doesn't necessarily mean good.

Nor does signing guys who are just as bad, or only slightly better for $10m a year. Everyone available in this free agency class, except for Fries, falls into that category for me.

Seahawks OLine Spending

2020- 26.6M (26th)
2021- 26.9M (22nd)
2022- 23.5M (28th)
2023- 20.5M (30th)
2024- 21.1M (32th)

18 individual offensive linemen are set to have higher cap hits in 2025 than the entire Seahawks unit. (Please read again).

There are two paths I would take to fix the OLine. Anything less just mirrors our weak patch job attempts of the last several offseasons and likely won't be an upgrade at all.

Option A
1) Sign Jenkins for 12/13M per. Figure the contract out to fit but make sure he wants to play here. Plug him In at LG.
2) Draft Tyler Booker at 18, move up a little if you must. Right Guard for 10 years with a rare attitude.

Option B
Fill our RG spot with Jenkins, J. Jones, draft pick, Haynes... our best option.
Draft a versatile OL type like Grey Zabel, Wyatt Milum, there are a few options here. Plug our #18 pick in at LG and when Cross' contract comes up we may be able to slide him over to LT if needed.

I also favor packaging a 2nd or 3rd to move up from 18 if the right OL is there.
Unless you'd rather have 10 picks in which half or more bust.

I'll just say it. If John waits until the 2nd round to address the OLine we are probably screwed.
--All those mocks showing WR's, TE's. DB'S, ect. at 18. I really hope those are not the visions in John's head.

Stop this pathetic cycle and let's fix it.
So much is riding on it.

Or Option C

Sign Jenkins to a 1 year deal and trade down to take Zabel in round 1.

Charles Cross is gonna cost the team 30 million next year, so might as well draft a new left tackle now, or figure something else out. It doesn't seem likely, they will dump that much in one offensive lineman.

The cutter line is real.

I think JS does an excellent job of identifying the problem. The only question is, can he find the solution. I think he can, but admittedly there's a pretty long track record now of misses on the O-line.

And I agree with passing on Fries with that contract. Just throwing money at a problem seldom fixes it, in fact, it usually makes it 10x worse.
