What's the difference between getting in the way and blocking? I'm really curious, especially in this instance. By turning the defensive back around, Wilson moved him out of position to dive at Lynch's leg and, instead, set him up to get knocked over when Beast Mode accelerated through the defenders.

Totally. When the goal is to clear a lane for the ball carrier, and you can accomplish that without contact... HA! double win.

Smart play. He more or less chipped Wilson out of the way. No need to try and cut him or hammer him. A QB 's shoulder pads don't have as much protection. It was good to see

Actually, that was the 2nd block of that nature just in the Redskins game. He pancaked a guy last week at St. Louis and had another block where he screened a guy.

I don't think that there is any comparing the way Wilson and Hass block. I don't think Holmgren wanted Hass blocking, but I heard someone on a postgame show say that is a typical play by a Pete Carroll QB.

Wilson's willingness to block worries me. I don't want him injuring a finger or any other body part for that matter.

No doubt that it means a lot to his teammates, though.

Think of most times an ordinary QB kind of accidentally finds himself in position to block, then defenders get a chance to put a hit on him. Russell goes full speed and TAKES IT TO 'EM. He didn't need to land a huge hit on anyone for that play. His speed, aggressiveness, and positioning were enough. Russell is a straight-up baller.

This play was not surprising. IMO he made a play last year that displayed more speed and football toughness. First game against MSU last year he threw an interception some 20+ yards down the field and was the first player to streak in for the tackle in that same area.
As the camera panned to the defender on that play you saw a tackler streaking in to make the hit. At first I thought it was a cornerback but then watching the replay in slo-mo proved it was our good friend Russell.
I was amazed at his burst of speed and toughness but most of all I was won over by his courage and sheer determination to rectify his errant play--I'm sure he had intended to cause a fumble. This was against a tough and physical Michigan State team who was intimidating and harassing RW all night long.
RW a straight up baller?--OH HELL YEA!! :179422:
