He should have a conference call with Dave Krieg about running for your life when the pocket collapses/evaporates before your eyes.

But seriously if that's as bad as he gets I'll take that all day and twice on Sunday.

Go Hawks!

yup, imagine the score if they convert just 60% of those red zone opps!

I thought he did fine for his first playoff game in a hostile environment against a team that blitzes heavily. I expect him to fair better against the Falcons.

First playoff game ever, on the road, long trip, nerves, bad field, down 14 points fast. Yea he was not his best but he settled down.

This was probably the best thing that could have happened to him. He will be that much better because of it.

Seattle you waited 37 years for this and we finally, finally got our Montana/Elway/Manning/Brady.

It was his first playoff game. Let's give the kid some slack.

He'll improve. It's what he does.

I figure the same so I expect to see a couple of screens run to keep them honest.

Wilson occasionally eschews the hot route looking for a deeper option. Sometimes that gets him into trouble. But it's not a problem, he'll grow.

I def thought accuracy was off and even easy throws were off a bit. I figured it was due to being blitzed up the wazoo the entire game, and maybe a little nerves.

I agree with the OP, while still feeling he played a helluva game and did enough when it mattered which is lights out for any rookie on the road in his first playoff game.

Who knows, one game under his belt, I think he's even better in Atlanta. Certainly the field conditions will be better for it.

He did make the worst decision in the red zone he's made all season, and he wasn't at his best in the accuracy department. All in all I was pretty satisfied with his first playoff start. I wanted him to make a few more plays in the redzone, this game should have been a blowout. I honestly think if Seattle would've been who they usually are in the redzone they score in the high 30's. He has been a lot better, but down 14 in that atmosphere, on the road, (180+yds/passing and 60+ rushing 1td/0 picks) playoffs yeah I'll take that performance any day.

P.S. I've heard a couple fans complain about RW missing Sidney Rice on his big run play. I watched that play a couple of times, you can see him going through his progressions, Sidney isn't open at first look, then scans when he gets back to Sidney wants to unload, but a defender steps up and Russell makes the good decision and steps up and gashes Washington for a huge gain.

He did what he had to do in order to do what had to be done. He got the win.

This thread is proof of how much Wilson has grown. We expect big things from him already, to the point where a playoff win where we didn't blow out a lesser opponent is somehow a bad thing.

But don't worry; Wilson knows where he can get better against Atlanta. I expect he will. The bigger the opponent, the better he plays.

WSH blitzes their CBs more than anyone in the league, and RW had the lowest QBR of anyone when opposing teams blitzed their CBs- it was a tough combo but he pulled it out.

Let's hope the Falcons don't blitz CBs very often.

Did anyone else think that Russell Wilson had a subpar game against Washington? He was great rushing the ball, but he didn't look very good passing he ball. It seemed Wilson wasn't commiting to the pocket like he normally does, and he also was missing throws, and reads that he normally would make like clockwork. The deepball to Baldwin, and he completely missed Sidney Rice streaking behind the defense.

For much of the game, what 'pocket?' He did well considering being hurried on most plays and sacked 5 times. If Cable puts an end to the Sweezy experiment until next season, RW might actually get a pocket. With 7 sacks against the Rams and 5 against ths skins, I would say using the playoffs to get our rook LG 'quality reps' is not very sound reasoning.

Wilson was pumped up , throwing hard and over throwing in some cases .it was his first playoff game nerves will factor in no matter how cool the customer is.

Wilson now has a playoff win, I think the nerves subside and he takes care of business. Its Matt Ryan who will be feeling immense pressure to win , we're playing with house money .

:13: Yep.....I believe that the above reasons accounted for 80% of the challenges he faced yesterday. However, if we are to win in Atlanta, the entire team will have to step up.

One thing that did concern me is that the Redskins at times seemed to have figured out where he was going to escape pressure.

I remember at least a few plays in particular where he escaped to the right (which is definitely a tendency) and earned a defender on a beeline, forcing him to throw it away on the right sideline. It seemed as though the Redskins had game-planned for that a bit, and I would be shocked if we didn't see the same from the Falcons.

Having said that, I am quite confident that he will learn from this. It's awesome that he's getting playoff experience in his first year. "There is no substitute."

Check out the performances of the other QBs in the 4 games to get an idea on how "tough" the playoffs are.
Andrew Dalton?
Matt Shaub?
Andrew Luck?
Joe Webb? (ok, shouldn't really be here)
Robert G. III?
Even winning QBs weren't that great .. except Aaron Rogers ...
Joe Flacco?
Russell will play better in the Dome. I really expect him to make sure the team doesn't get down 14 or 21 points.

The biggest thing that I didn't like from Wilson was how he bailed from the pocket too early. Normally he tucks and runs as a last resort, this game he was bailing on pass plays, and taking off with regular frequency. It caused us to miss some big plays down field.

The only time I felt he made the "wrong" decision to run was when he missed a wide open Rice and took off downfield - for his longest run of the season.
But in that case - although I only saw the replay once, from Wilson's POV it appeared he had a defender bearing down right in his LoS, by the time he had evaded him it was clear to see the wide-open running lane

While his overall stats looked a little pedestrian compared to what he's done in the second half of the season, he limited mistakes while making impact plays on the ground and in the air. He did seem a little off in DC, but I wonder how much is based on the amount of pressure he's received in the last couple of games and how it has affected his pocket presence (call it QB radar for the rushers). In spite of that, he's still out performed the other QBs who've had very little pressure.

Seattle vs. Washington
Wilson
187 passing yds / 1 TD / 0 INT
67 rushing yds
5 sacks

Griffin
84 passing yds / 2 TD / 1 INT
21 rushing yds
2 sacks

Seattle vs. St.Louis
Wilson
250 passing yds / 1 TD / 0 INT
58 rushing yds / 1 TD
6 sacks

Bradford
252 passing yds / 1 TD / 1 INT
6 rushing yds
0 sacks
