I thought he did just fine when it counted. He was being constantly blitzed and was sacked 5 times. The pressure was intense on him but he made plays when he had to make plays. Frankly I thought our pass protection was less than stellar.

All in all the D won the game but the O scored enough to get the W. It was disappointing to watch the numerous failures to convert inside the redzone but the WRs were not getting open and the run plays were not working at those times. It came together and the team including RW got stronger as the game went on.

Let's not forget that Washington has a very good D which has been solid for the last 8 games of the season.

This is a joke right?

Russell Wilson managed this game well. 0 INTs (thanks in part to Doug Baldwin, but nonetheless), ~65 yards rushing, 90+ passer rating? There were a few instances where he didn't see a receiver, overthrew them and the like, but if this is his version of sub par? I'm ok with that. He's no Matt Ryan with 5INT when he has a tough game.

WAS knows how to blitz and they are willing to do it at will. With blitz defenses I expect rookie and veteran QBs alike to throw INTs trying to rush the ball out.

Wilson went into the playoffs on someone else's crappy home field in front of 88k and we're going to try to complain?

On the deep throw to Baldwin, Baldwin was held on his double move which slowed him down. Otherwise I think that throw would have been on the money, or at least certainly a lot closer.

:13: To the OP: That's why they call it the playoffs! This aint no Madden game and most experts on TV were complimentary of Russell's play. Just think if was Rodgers or Brees playing like that last night would you think the same way?

Just like his rookie first start pressure, he has a rookie first playoff pressure.

Atleast thats how I see it. No worries.

He played just fine. I think he will do much better next week, because that read option should shred Atlanta's defense. Isn't that what Cam Newton rolls with? He had 100 yards, or close to it, in both games this year.

Cam's two biggest rushing outputs of the season BOTH came against the Falcons

I'm guessing Bevell and Wilson will be watching a lot of tape of those games.

He came from 14 behind in his first playoff game - on the road no less.

He took care of the ball and didn't panic. We won the game. What is there not to love?

I disagree with the OP. I thought he played very well minus the near pick to Baldwin (thanks Baldy). He extended a lot of plays and handled pressure very well once he settled down after the first quarter. Missing a wide open Rice was unfortunate, but on the replay, he tucked and ran before Rice broke away. You could see him look at all that open mud in front of him and he took off.

He is the last rookie standing, I think he did just fine! I expected the field to affect the game and thats what I saw, the WRs could not run as fast and the throws were accurate to the speed of turf and not grass. We have not historically done well with grass, so he did just fine!

I've said it in other threads, I'll say it again here - The horrible field had everything to do with Russell's issues throwing the ball yesterday - good footing and footwork are very important when throwing passes in today's NFL - Also, I think that Russell is used to being able to throw the ball up and let receivers like Baldwin and Rice run under the the ball - The field conditions yesterday prevented the receivers from running at their normal speed which directly resulted in those overthrows.

I like this idea. It really did seem like his accuracy was off all game.

Bad footing made him make bad decisions?

Wilson didn't make bad decisions, he just had off accuracy. Third down throw to Miller (shoestring catch), deep throw to Baldwin (overthrown), and slant inside the 5 to Tate (a little innacurate) to name a few. Russell usually throws those well.

"Thanks Baldy". I hear that!

You look at our WRs compared to most in the NFL. Most being divas, seldom fight off a defender from intercepting the ball. I mean, they make an effort, almost in disgust, but seldom do you see them fight as hard as ours. I think it's the "I have your back, RW" mentality of this entire team. This is the same mentality that when ML fumbled, I knew the team was going to rally around him and get the win. No way would they let the game end with ML being a goat in the media. No way.

Did anyone else think that Russell Wilson had a subpar game against Washington? He was great rushing the ball, but he didn't look very good passing he ball. It seemed Wilson wasn't commiting to the pocket like he normally does, and he also was missing throws, and reads that he normally would make like clockwork. The deepball to Baldwin, and he completely missed Sidney Rice streaking behind the defense.
Yep, he completely changed his play away from what the Deadskins had studied him for,,Tendencies repeated= neutralization.
Some of his passes were errant (overthrows), but he came through when the chips were down, and overcame the 14 point deficit with flying colors,,Of course the whole team can take a bow for winning this game.....Like it's suppose to be :th2thumbs:

Yeah, I suspect the field conditions had a big effect, not only on the long ball (where the timing gets all weird, because guys aren't where you expect) but also on the short ball (which becomes essentially impossible in the face of a blitz). Normally when teams blitz, it's possible to get the ball out quickly to a hot receiver. With the field as bad as it was, that timing was super short, between having to plant to throw accurately, and the receivers having trouble getting off the line... The field conditions totally suck, and obviously bit the Redskins in the a$$ but conversely it is a huge advantage to the defense if they do not cover passes well to have a choppy slow field like that.

RGIII is usually accurate as well, but wasn't so much yesterday. His knee had something to do with that I think, but I suspect the footing on that crappy excuse for a field also affected him and Russell.

Also, even the most poised QBs can get a little amped for their first playoff game, especially when they're running for their lives. Russell definitely hasn't looked as sharp when he's faced a ton of pressure this season. It's one area he needs to improve upon (as does our o-line with protections). I have every confidence he'll master this.

He should have a conference call with Dave Krieg about running for your life when the pocket collapses/evaporates before your eyes.

But seriously if that's as bad as he gets I'll take that all day and twice on Sunday.

Go Hawks!
